Twitter should ban the whole Trump family. Now that would be funny.

Congratulating Facebook or Twitter for finally banning Donald Trump is like congratulating an oil company for cleaning up their toxic spill.

Fucking around and finding out - the extended version.

My opinion: That was their big day. They made their plans, packed their backpacks with their MREs and got their flags.
In the end they failed, and look like the bunch of cosplay militia that they actually are. The idea that they are going to get it together to make an even bigger thing happen now after this failure is ludicrous.
These people are getting arrested in droves. Sure a few people may blow something up, or shoot something up....but they will be isolated...and they have been doing that anyway, white supremicists, for years.
I have neighbors who had Trump flags on their lawn. I cannot see them rioting violently anytime soon. They just don't like liberals...but they are not ready to die over it, or even get arrested.
In the end there is no there there. What do they stand for?

"Storm the Capitol! I'll be right there with you!"
cowarddkoblesky - I like this take.DRIFTMONKEY
- Exactly what I have been saying for years. 100% this. The idea they might just commit murder over Trump is stupid AF.monospaced

To anyone complaining about a private media company like Twitter kicking Trump off of their platform:
Think of Twitter as a Christian bakery and Trump as a gay wedding cake!
- yupGuyFawkes
- For anyone defending Twitter kicking Trump of their platform:
Think of Twitter as a Christian bakery and Trump as a gay wedding cake!palimpsest - Everybody wins!palimpsest
- No. The metaphor is if trump walks into the bakery and starts shitting on the floor. Then asks everyone else to do the same. And then he’s told to go away.monospaced
- The gay couple was told they wouldn’t be served because they were gay. Not because they violated any rules of civility or business.monospaced
- But I'm this metaphor Trump is a gay cake, not the client.
Giving a cake a sexual orientation is already pushing it. We're not gonna make it shit on the floor.palimpsest

They should have been consistent and banned him a long time ago. Any other person would have been banned hundreds of times for the things he posted. So this is Twitter finally applying the rules to Trump, not the other way around.
And if there was ever an argument for banning someone from Twitter this is it. He is a deeply unstable person who is issuing orders to millions of people. He incited his followers to actually break into Congress to overthrow an election lol. So why would you take the risk, legal and otherwise, of keeping his account going?
Having said that knowing the level of political discussion in America right now a lot of people will ignore all of that and simply equate this with "big tech censorship." And then call for terrible solutions like Section 230 of the Communications Act being repealed, which has nothing to do with free speech.
You can already hear the Joe Rogans of the world..."OK sure breaking into Congress was bad but these tech companies bro...they literally destroyed the First Amendment" *takes bong hit
So I'm kind of ambivalent about this decision. I understand why they did it on the merits (and may have been forced to for legal or financial reasons), but it's hard to see how this doesn't just pour gasoline on the dumpster fire that is US politics.
- strategically the best thing was NOT to ban him. and yes, he should have been kicked out years ago even before the presidency. vile cunt that he is.renderedred
- I'm also ambivalent about it. I don't think they did the right thing but rather the convenient one.palimpsest
- They don't have my sympathy but I can't find an argument against it.palimpsest
- section 230 is not an issue, something is very wrong with these social media companies and their setup to begin with.renderedred
- Yeah it's very clear now they encourage rampant sensationalism, misinformation and conspiracies. What is shocking is how many people in an educated societyyuekit
- fall for it...I never would have guessed in a million years you'd see something like this.yuekit
- Maybe it's not about the law and there is simply a better way to structure these apps (in terms of user experience etc) so we can avoid negative side of them.yuekit
- i agree, fundamentally something has to change in the concept of social media itself.renderedred
- i was also surprised how far it went.renderedred
- Did the right thing, Trump is/was too dangerous and insane. Fuel for the fire is reduced that way.neverscared

Part of this is 'duh' but it is still worth reading
'The White Male Effect'
https://undark.org/2021/01/07/sc…
As a white male, I have a hard time understanding being threatened by people who are not white male. Where I work my manager is a woman, and 3 layers above, all women. I work with all kinds of POC who are my peers. It doesn't bother me a bit.
But many many white males feel differently. That is who all these people are. I guess the just LOVE being a white male....and the idea of someone who is not being a White male makes them crazy...

- It might be because they think they’re better than anyone who isn’t white, or a male. Like many who have graced this board in the past. MGTOWmonospaced

Not sure it's been posted yet but Vice News posted a video of Trump's January 6th speech with footage from the days events... Followed by his remorseful speech. It needs to be played during his impeachment hearing and all Representatives and Senators need to watch it. I am sure there is nothing new here yet this is the first speech of his i listened to in it's entirety in years as my usual response to news about him and or his rallies is F this guy. This was a Hitler-esque performance and truly chilling. He wound up his terrrorists with flattery and bravado just like Hitler would then turned them loose on than Capitol. Again this man is a danger to society and not to be laughed off. He feeds the id of the White Nationalists and the Radical Right in a manner we have not seen since Hitler.
