Barnett is charged with knowingly entering or remaining in any restricted building or grounds without lawful authority; violent entry and disorderly conduct on Capitol grounds; and theft of public money, property, or records.

If convicted, he faces a maximum penalty of one year in prison. Actual sentences for federal crimes are typically less than the maximum penalties. A federal district court judge will determine any sentence after taking into account the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors.

Doesn't one year seem a bit light? Seems like most of these dudes have priors which may change sentencing, but overall, the charges and time detailed seem minimal to me, no?

    • I hate all of these f'ers but unless they have images of them breaking windows and/or vandalizing I think only a trespass charge will stickfooler
    • A year would be enough for me.monospaced
    • They'll get maybe 6 months, serve 2. Maybe not even that if fed sentences are less as it states in article - seems light to me.whatthefunk
    • one year for breaking into Pelosi's office, rifling thru her stuff (and pinching her mail) seems VERY light, no?hardhat

Democrats are going to impeach or remove him like 40 minutes before Inauguration Day and then high five each other about what an amazing job they did.

At the end of the day, after reading way too many articles, I’m left with this gut feeling. The MAGA followers are not that different from Democrat supporters. Their tweets of a stolen election are no different from 2016. They have unfortunately have become more radicalized than the dems sure.

Democrats aren’t necessarily happy with Biden as their president. Better than Trump is what seems got him across the line. But the true Democratic agenda won’t be achieved, despite having both houses in congress.

What is happening is the disenfranchisement of Americans. The gap between the rich and poor (middle class is now a part of that too) is far too wide. Americans are unhappy and aren’t sure how to vent out the their frustrations. Trump offered a false bridge or shortcut to the wire, but it was all a sham. The democrats offer the same bridge, but somehow seem to “fall short” of party expectations due to opposition from the other side.

There will be no single pay healthcare. There will be no true environmental reform. It’s all a mirage. The MAGA people had the balls to act on it. The dens are more cucks, I think is what the younger generation would say.

Needless to say I’ve been wrapped up in all this the same as everyone else, only to come to the conclusion that my interest is a waste of my time and effort.

There should be a party of the poor that trult represents the disenfranchised (99%), but the decision between Pepsi and Coke distracts us from the other options and unity.

    • Trump offered a false bridge or shortcut to the inside, but it was all a sham*instrmntl
    • At the end of the day MAGA want the same as us, but have been brainwashed to think their needs and wants are different, much like liberals. It’s all different..instrmntl
    • packaging, but the adventure you choose throws you down different Facebook/Google rabbit holes.instrmntl
    • Dems pointing out how ridiculous MAGA is supporting a party that doesn’t care about them should self reflect.instrmntl
    • 4 Mikkellar beers in so I could feel completely different tomorrow. Thanks for reading all. Please discuss as I’d like to hear how others feel.instrmntl
    • I’m hesitant to think a 78 year olds reflects my interest, and has cabinet picks have signaled that.instrmntl
    • If you call what happened “balls to act on it” then you’re as full of shit as this nonsense assessment. Fuck that.monospaced
    • Biden isn’t selling lies like Trump did. He ain’t selling the radical left agenda! That is a right wing conspiracy too. Holy shit how off can you be?monospaced
    • First of all, dems aren’t all radical. Dems aren’t a homogenous party of group thinkers.jtb26
    • And the gap you speak of? It was the Republican agenda that actively worked hard af to widen the gap. Dems only want to close it a bit.monospaced
    • This conclusion only works if you believe the lies spewed by the right.monospaced
    • At least not like the GOP has become. Fringe radicals calling for the reversal of elections in 2016 did not receive majority support of the party.jtb26
    • The “both sides” argument here is hot trash. Of the many marches and protests against Trump, few were this violent.jtb26
    • how anyone here could look at the last 12 months and go "yeah but dems are bad too!" is kind of insane to me.inteliboy
    • BLM riots are over actual grievance, and instigated by police tactics. Not lies about a stolen election.jtb26
    • also a really lazy way to view the political climate in the USA.inteliboy
    • Standing up against systemic racism, supported by the right, was balls. Marching on the Capitol over a false premise was embarrassingly pathetic.monospaced
    • how anyone here could look at the last 48 months and go "yeah but dems are bad too!" is kind of insane to me.neverscared
    • Great feedback and discussion. Balls to act on it is not an approval on their actions and far from it. And nobody is talking about selling an agenda, notinstrmntl
    • sure where that’s coming from. I mentioned Biden is more central?instrmntl
    • And I never said Dems are bad. There are a lot of assumptions being made. I think the Republicans are horrific.instrmntl
    • However, the point was that their movement appears to be a group of down and out people that have taken their frustrations and misguided their focus to hate.instrmntl
    • However at the core, perhaps they can redeemed and redirected. That should be a core value if the Dems want to untie the country.instrmntl
    • Unite*instrmntl
    • I’m trying to be as I objective in my writing as possible, but that leads people to fill in their own views into the words and label them as my own.instrmntl
    • There needs to be a lesson in this. Yes arrests need to be made made and examples set. But after that then what? Hope the 74mil people see the light?instrmntl
    • As the gap becomes wider, people become more disenfranchised. Dems discounting their opponents instead of trying to help gets us nowhere.instrmntl
    • Not all of us can be rich kids from Santa Barbara.instrmntl
    • It seems lazy to not analyze why they have become this way and not want to help for the better of society.instrmntl
    • Agreed not everyone can have the luxury of living in a diverse city. We need to prevent homogenous areas from becoming racists and need to figure out how.instrmntl
    • Reassessing our police dept requirements are one obviously. School districts etc need to be re-examined.instrmntl
    • Just pointing out they are assholes doesn’t help anything. You’re just stating the obvious to make yourself feel better.instrmntl
    • Once agian, the comparison falls apart the second you look at the Dem grievances. They are good causes. The republicans can't say the same.monospaced

    INST TRMNTL:

If you cannot see the difference between MAGA and Liberals you are blind.

First, let me take your point that the issues about inequality are real. I think that Dem and Rep leadership have been corrupt, and both with their hands in the same cookie jar. Serious issues there.

That being said, our system, flawed as it is, actually can enable positive things if the people in power, held accountable by voters, do it.

Obama administration actually made progress with the ACA. Obama himself being president was progress. Kamala Harris being VP is progress. And so on. Long list. Not perfect. But nothing is.

You can say it is all bad and let's burn it down buy with what?

I have studied revolutions some. They usually end up worse than they started because bad people come in and take advantage of chaos.

The US has some really good strong institutions. Whey can't we work to make them better?

And these MAGA people? They are a bunch of entitled racists. I do not hear them talking about economic equality. In fact they say nothing that makes sense. I hear them saying Trump is some kind of god and spouting conspiracy theories. They aren't poor. They are entitled children, cosplay militia tazing their own balls.

    • Great points and I agree. Obama had the house and senate and could have passed single pay. He caved to the industry. My parents side with you so I understandinstrmntl
    • your view. Obviously the racist part I don’t agree with. However I feel like that divide happened with Trump.instrmntl
    • When Google search supports your views in search, it will amplify the hateful views and slowly turn people. Same w FB.instrmntl
    • Clarification I dont agree w racism and agree w you it’s ugly and needs to be eradicated.instrmntl
    • Oh dude. There is old latent, unconscious bias and mild accepted racism all up in the right. They live nowhere near cities or diversity it’s a fact.monospaced
    • It exists on both sides, but ALL of the ugliest part, millions of them, are die hard Trumpers.monospaced
    • I’ve read a lot of stories where people seem to get caught in the Q rabbit hole. That can’t just be stupidly, although much probably is. It’s also theinstrmntl
    • recommendation algorithms used by Google, Facebook, YouTube, Instagram etc. They prey on the weak.instrmntl
    • I agree there are shit ton of racist people. They deserve nothing.instrmntl
    • I don’t agree w the MAGA at all, but feel sorry for them. How did they get down that path? As a society it’s in our best interest to figure out why....instrmntl
    • Unfortunately we have to share the country w them. Banning Trump on Twitter is a bandaid to the problem.instrmntl
    • Yes. That I agree. They are there, they are misguided, confused, and disgruntled. They are strong in their bigotry and it isn’t going to be easy to overcomemonospaced

Democrats aren't just less-radical MAGAs. They believe in science, and they believe government can help solve societal problems. The MAGAs don't believe in anything except hazy sort of faux-Libertarian shit..."the government is trynna take away our guns!" "I pay too much tax as it is!" Don't tread on us white people!

The people who stormed the Capitol were middle-class, upper-middle class, rich. They were not poor working class people hit with economic anxiety. They were CEOs, elected officials, middle management types. They were fucking family medicine doctors, for God's sake. How stupid do you have to be to practice family medicine during a pandemic where 4,000 people are dying daily in the U.S., and believe that masks are mind control devices?

These people got time off from their jobs, and bought plane tickets and RVs to go on this little trip. They don't seem to understand what is wrong with breaking down the doors and windows of a federal building, and looting it.

They're stupid, amoral, privileged white people. The left? The BLM protests were largely peaceful until the cops started busting heads or right-wingers showed up looking to foment revolution. Don't even think we're close to these idiots by degree.

    • very well saiddkoblesky
    • and down a few posts, listen to the video rant on twitter by Correy Forrester about them. it is awesome.dkoblesky
    • BLM and MAGA are polar opposites (for the better). That should be implied. Was hoping for a discussion of how to change the country for the better.instrmntl
    • Will leave it at that and hope things in this country get better.instrmntl
    • I guess the point I’m trying to say is nobody is saying your points of views are wrong and not what the majority here already thinks....instrmntl
    • But what can be learned from this to help unify the country in the next fours years. So far is just left vs right talking points lacking depth of next steps.instrmntl

If the Republicans are sincere about unity, they’d force resignations from Cruz and Hawley.

K, here's an opinion column by Peter Meijer (R-Mich). He writes on Twitter:

We can’t paper over the assault on the Capitol with empty calls for ‘unity.’ Unless my party faces the truth of what happened and holds those responsible to account, we will never regain the public’s trust and earn the honor of leading the nation forward.

Trump promised he would do such a great job and he was going to get it all done so fast and everyone would be so happy with his results.

Everyone with a bit of common sense knew that we only needed to look at his business ventures to see that he is, in general, a failure. If you can’t run a casino project in Atlantic City, you’re unlikely to run a country that is infinitely more complex and challenging.

Anyway, a lot of the country had been dumbed down and chose to believe Trump when he sold them on all he would achieve and that we would ALL be so happy with his results.

Now look around. Is anyone happy?

Everyone is angrier than ever. More lost than ever. He might be the least successful president of all time.
