I hope he strokes out sometime between now and 2024.

“Family values” conservatism is finally dead.

meh. Historically, presidents don't get anything but a slap on the wrist. Even Nixon was pardoned.
Nothing to see here.
- True however Nixon probably would have been convicted if he hadn't resigned first. Unlike Trump he knew when to call it quitsyuekit
- Nixon didn’t incite an insurrection either.Ramanisky2
- Nixon didn't also talk about running again********
- semantics but it remains the same concept. the person that is president gets an unusual amount of leeway due to the title and respect bestowed to them.********

I think the Dems handled it well given the constraints they were under. Two thirds to convict is a very high hurdle given current political realities but they still got large majorities in both House and Senate to vote against Trump. He will still go down in history as the only president who was impeached twice.
They also didn't let it drag on for weeks but documented what happened in great detail within a few days and took a stand saying this is wrong.
Anything beyond that is out of their hands and totally up to Republicans, including whether they want to continue to be led around by this clown in the future.
- agreed. not having witnesses was smart. I don't want to see Kathy Griffith deposed....it would be so stupiddkoblesky

The notion that a man who twice lost the popular vote, the last time by 7 million votes...who presided over the most disastrous handling of a crisis in modern history...who was responsible for Republicans losing control of ALL THREE branches of government...may make a comeback, is the funniest thing I have seen in years.
If this is the Republican version of "winning"...just wow.
- His tax cut was something only he had been able to accomplish.instrmntl
- But agreed he’s scuminstrmntl
- Factor in the electoral college advantage, and he’d only need swing 46k in the right places to win. Not to mention what a few crooked repub legislators can do.12xu
- Nate Silver posted something a while back about how Trumpism is weaker than the Democratic coalition...but that establishment Republicanism is weaker than that.yuekit
- So that explains why they are terrified of alienating the Trump voter base, even if those same voters also create a problem for them.yuekit
- Weak parties = strong partisanship12xu

U.S. Supreme Court Allows Release Of Trump Tax Returns
The U.S. Supreme Court on Monday paved the way for a New York City prosecutor to obtain former President Donald Trump’s tax returns and other financial records as part of a criminal investigation, a blow to his quest to conceal details of his finances.

But Boo! I'd almost forgotten about the cunt.Nairn - Oh, hold on – Danish should have my ire for the bump :)Nairn

Trump's tax returns and related records turned over to Manhattan district attorney
Though the documents handed off from Trump's long-time accounting firm Mazars won't be released to the public because they're subject to grand jury secrecy rules, their delivery caps off an extraordinary 17-month quest by the former President and his lawyers to block investigators from obtaining the records.

Trump's statement:
“The new phenomenon of “headhunting” prosecutors and AGs—who try to take down their political opponents using the law as a weapon—is a threat to the very foundation of our liberty,” Trump explained in the statement. “That’s fascism, not justice—and that is exactly what they are trying to do with respect to me, except that the people of our Country won’t stand for it.”
This guy STILL thinks that if his "people" "won't stand for it" it actually means something. Look, Donnie, have you not figured out that isn't how things work, yet?
- I believe he believes that if he gets enough people upset about this, that they can actually stop a legally required process to investigate fraud charges.monospaced
- and he's probably right. Just look at McConnell's comments, yet he still supports Donny due to his numbers.formed
- He’s not right. An angry mob of mouth breathing ignorant bigots can’t stop a fraud investigation. They will stand for it.monospaced

I hate to think about this, but....
Trump lost significantly but should have lost in a landslide. Why? Not just because he's garbage (which he is) but because his entire campaign strategy hinges on him being "the DC-outsider coming in to save us from the government." That persona doesn't really make any sense if he is president. You can't be the underdog outsider complaining about the system when you're in charge of everything.
Yet he still did very well, considering. When the 2024 race really heats up, he'll be back in the position he was in 2016. This time with a loyal base of morons to support him.
He could totally win again. Sheesh.
- For me, the most disturbing thing is how he gained support from minorities, over the course of his termGnash
- he obviously hit a nerve with a big chunk of the population, a chunk that transcends ethnic and socio-economic backgrounds_niko
- I also think if the news media takes a big enough hit, they'll make sure he wins again, it was the golden age of news, both fake, legit, mainstream and absurd._niko
- Any political adverts against him will be sure to show the dark side of that attack on the Capitol. Goddamn Trump is so anti-American it hurts.nb

The Supreme Court finally rejected Sidney Powell's election conspiracy theory lawsuits.
The Supreme Court on Monday formally rejected two of Sidney Powell's lawsuits seeking to overturn the results of the 2020 US election, brushing away any lingering ideas that Donald Trump would be declared the true winner.
