Donald Trump appeals to his base mostly because of his deluded sense of patriotism. His base begs for a patriotic hero to instill a source of US pride and Trump's beats match those ideals but they also match those of nationalists and fascists.
To this base, the leftists look like ungrateful or disillusioned citizens of an upcoming global culture takeover. Ready to change the status quo of a country they are in love with and trying to protect. The leftists feel the country needs major change and will do whatever it takes to see their vision integrated. These are the battle grounds, apparently.
