China Successfully Tests Hyperloop-like Train Inside A Vacuum Tube
{ Suck It, Elon Musk. }China claims to have become the first country in the world to successfully carry out tests on a Hyperloop-style, magnetically levitated train inside a vacuum tube — or "vactrain" for short — according to a report from state-run newspaper China Daily.
Researchers tested the train along a roughly 1.25-mile track in the province of Shanxi in northern China. During the test, it reached speeds of up to 80 mph inside a "low vacuum tube," according to the report. The team is only getting started. The goal is to eventually construct a full-scale, 37-mile test track and have trains reach speeds of up to 621 mph.

The US is forcefully decoupling the entire advanced technology supply chain before China insources it.
Advanced logic, such as AI and HPC chips, are restricted. Equipment for 16nm or more minor logic chips, non-planar logic chips include FinFET and Gate All Around, NAND with 128-layers or more, and DRAM with 18nm half-pitch or less are restricted.
Specific equipment bans go further and limit many even older technologies. Many major Chinese companies and universities will no longer have access to the American supply chain, which includes practically every large company in Europe, Japan, Taiwan, South Korea, Singapore, and India.

- Trump made a lot of noise but Biden's new policy on semiconductors is probably the toughest US action against China so far.yuekit
- It’s one thing to announce policy, it’s another to police it.shapesalad
- As they should. Is one thing to be a production hub and quite another to steal or force "sharing" of IP they don't have rights too in Chynagrafician
- But undoing all the Western capitalists done over the past decades will take some time...grafician
- And could prompt Chyna to "hinder" Taiwan as a semiconductor hub as blackmail or orsegrafician
- UMM. A lot of the technical stats blow by me, not a nanometers guy.garbage

- I'm not generally a fan of these trade restrictions, I'd rather see free trade. But you have to acknowledge that China itself does the same thing.yuekit
- And Xi Jinping is currently threatening to invade and take over the world's leading producer of semiconductors.yuekit

- Both the CCP and NK seem to have boners for artillery, whilst the US seems to have one for tanks and planes.Continuity
- CCP and NK can't occupy shit, their logistics - just like Russia's - are a joke. Huge numbers, zero impact.
While the US are all about mobilitygrafician - Well, CCP (as far as I know) only want to occupy TW, which is a much smaller territory than, say, UA. So occupying it might not be so much of a challenge.Continuity
- As for NK's capbilities, I don't know enough to speculate or be an armchair strategist. And, again, seems to me they only want to have a go at SK ...Continuity
- ... though I imagine that wouldn't go well for them, all things considered. *Unless* the CCP is trying to annex TW, and the West is too busy trying to stop thatContinuity
- Then NK would probably have an easier time of it.Continuity
- Considering all this, investing so much in your military when nobody really wants to occupy you or you don't occupy others is nuts but heygrafician
- But remember Russia "modernised" its military for 2 decades and we've seen how "advanced" they are so I guess Chyna and NK won't be far behind only to save facegrafician
- re: Taiwan, that's impossible to occupy without failure. Instant failure!grafician
- Russia's got more skin in the military build-up game, however. For them, everything post-USSR has been about revanchism against Nato and its allies.Continuity
- China didn't go through that kind of humiliation and loss of territory. They even gained some, after HK was tranferred to them from the UK.Continuity
- Nonetheless: I'd actually still be more worried about the CCP's military capabilities than of Russia's. It's pretty clear that if it came down to it,Continuity
- Nato would ass-fuck Russia dry in a conventional shooting war. Versus the CCP, it's hard to say.Continuity
- NATO was created to counter Russia mostly, in Europe. I see no point in having NATO <> Chyna or NK militarilygrafician
- That's what it would come down to, though, should the CCP try to annex TW. The US has already made it clear they'd intervene, and I guess at least *some*Continuity
- ... Nato countries would probably join in. Also, Russia v CCP AFs: I'm guessing the CCP's forces are *way* more disciplined than RUS's, on top of being ...Continuity
- ... far more numerous. That really changes any calculus when we're talkiing about the chances of invasion successes.Continuity
- But, since the CCP hasn't really battled-tested their forces in RU- or even US-style overseas 'adventures', everything I'm saying is pure guess and speculation.Continuity
- Only NATO countries with a navy anyway
But there's no point on getting Taiwan if they blow up the semis fabs so...grafician

My friend is an architect here in NYC. Medium/Large firm. On the weekend he told me “all our clients just stopped paying recently. Invoices were sent for a while and then they just told us ‘we aren’t paying’. I asked him why and he just shrugged.
Tens of millions of dollars, so not a remarkable amount of money but also not just one client. Many clients.
What do you think is going on here?

BMW to move production of electric Minis from UK to China
