There are all sorts of people in the protest. There are people fighting for racism, there are trolls and influencers looking for clout, there are instigators (white supremacists) trying to make the movement look bad, there's the opposition sending their own instigators to making it look like the gov doesn't have control over the situation. And among all these people, there are those that have been jobless for the last 2 months who are just tired of everything.
- surprised there isn't more looting with 28.5 million (and growing) jobless peoplemoldero
- Give it a couple of weeks, moldero...Nairn

In 2 weeks are we going to seek a spike in cases of Covid-19 amongst the black community in NYC etc? Those young protesters, a lot living at home, bring it home to parents, to grand parents. It's going to be more wood on the fire....
- Doubt it. Infections done pretty much by now.NBQ00
- Why would it only spread to black people? https://static01.nyt…nb

- shapesalad is racist ;)NBQ00
- If you look at the marches, it isn't just members of the black community out there.
The second wave in America will not be good. Lets not forget the open thePhanLo - economy marches last week.PhanLo
- Sorry, wasn't aware I was being racist. Just saw on the news lots of young black kids protesting, and so just thought about that.shapesalad
- I guess there are protestors and police of all races and so... same thought, are we seeing a covid spike in 2 weeks?shapesalad
- And my first thought was more out of concern, as I remember seeing a news report about NYC: disproportionate amount of covid deaths in black community.shapesalad
- And so I was thinking about that, and how if covid deaths spike in the community, it'll only add more pain and anger and despair...shapesalad
- I guess there's no answer to it all. Everything is unfortunately happening at once and seems to be spiralling downwards....shapesalad
- "Just saw on the news lots of young black kids protesting." That's fair. But you may want to change the channel. You're not seeing an accurate picture.nb

"For the past fifty years, police unions have done their best to block policing reforms of all kinds. In the seventies, they opposed officers’ having to wear name tags.
More recently, they’ve opposed the use of body cameras and have protested proposals to document racial profiling and to track excessive-force complaints. They have lobbied to keep disciplinary histories sealed.
If a doctor commits malpractice, it’s a matter of public record, but, in much of the country, a police officer’s use of excessive force is not. Across the nation, unions have led the battle to limit the power of civilian-review boards, generally by arguing that civilians are in no position to judge the split-second decisions that police officers make.
Earlier this year, Newark created a civilian-review board that was acclaimed as a model of oversight. The city’s police union immediately announced that it would sue to shut it down."

this would be the first problem to tackle, if this gets a fix quick, the other big reforms concerning racism, discrimination and lack of equality would follow...
but for sure the US can't do this under a Rep Gov and not under Drump.

- I never considered it until the COVID lockdown. Now, it's a talk I've had with my partner. However, it's easy to downplay the commute when you're not doing it.nb
- I feel that's the commuter trap that gets most people. They tell themselves that 30+ minutes extra on a train won't be so bad. But it's bad.nb
