This was announced a while back but coming in to force October 2nd. The increase is from $460 to $705, or $1,440 for a fast-track application which may not seem like much but bands in Europe generally use local companies to sort the paperwork that have their own charges on top. When you add flights, tour backline hire and driver/ tour management - touring the states was already a cash hole for many mid level bands...

Crucially the applications will take longer to process too (even the fast-track applications moving from 15 calendar days to 15 working days) ... From personal experience the last time the indie band I played in were invited to SXSW we had 3 shows lined up in Austin and half a two week tour planned around it. Visa applications (non fast-track) were costing £2k for 3 people (we were quoted 5k by firm in Dublin for the same). Of course you also have to book your flights and spunk a couple grand in other non-refundable charges months in advance of actually having your visa applications granted - We'd even been offered funding from the british council to cover flights, but the funding was dependant on the successful visa - it was a choice for us between potentially being a couple of grand down for a US tour or Recording and Pressing another LP and touring Europe (while making a small profit) already a no brainer for most... Given how fucked the music industry is now i'd say this is the final nail in the coffin for many well known bands touring the US.

    • Quietus? I read this yesterday, seems entirely fucked in the head. Simply not spending as much on viagra for military personnel would easily negate the cost.face_melter

I fancy a good part of America, if I'm honest. Everyone's on about the coming civil war and I'm not having it, but I do taste a bit of anarchy in November's forecast.

I expect a rash of killing, each offender pleading justice on their magistrate's Twitter feed; every jury tainted; every opinion polarized. I see that.

I dunna see war. I'm cautioned that anarchy is near as makes no difference war, but every time the Lakers get to cum in someone else's mouth, Los Angeles burns, but that's not war.

Imagine instead the entire NBA, NFL, and MLB teams' simultaneous championships: massive metro-wide anarchy for days, weeks, or months, but not war. Second Amendment be damned--there's no way for American civilians to make a dent in any opposition but their own, under-armed kind...

...and that's exactly what they'll do.

The only good thing I see about this is the LGBTQ community realizing that guns are not a bad idea after all, and quickly reconsider the notion that only the GOP get to have guns. As a person with both a penis and a vagina, I have significant issues with my postcode not allowing the peace of mind afforded by those in, say, 90210 (or 84058, or 10121, etc).

I've been to America quite a lot, actually. I got mugged by a rough little chav in New Orleans in '99--he was armed with a sharpened toothbrush. I gave him ten quid instead of the beating he deserved because he represented "street-preneur" in a society that would accept no more serious motivation to divorce oneself from paper money. I wanted to see his attitude improve and it didn't.

    Entitlement. The lesson was mine.

America is in for a rough fukkin fourth quarter, but Hogmannay is gonna be "LIT MUTHAFUKKAS" what with the isolated but peculiarly colorful bonfires strategically placed in camera-shot of every major news network on the continent.

America *IS* fucked...but the clock is ticking until America unfucks itself and shames every Trumptard mong into killing off the GOP one voter at a time and diluting the remaining party with the merger of extroversion and private capital.

Liberals outnumber conservatives. Once they realize this, SOMEBODY is going to do that bar scene from "A Bug's Life" and fuck a GOP scapegoat with a thousand acorns. From there, the Left will arm themselves, #BlackLivesShootBack, and "SOME" president with more conscience than a cheeze-spray will say, "Now, now, let's sit down, let's have a beer together, let's talk this out..."

    And that's a start. It'll generate laughs, but it's a start.

...while BoJo wanks another chapter into Brexit's manifesto.

    • Peace of mind in post codes cause u are a hermie? What force can stop your mind of having peace? I don't get it
      ********
    • Why are you still here? Oh, right: because you are the voice of the mods who clamor just as much bigotry with not enough balls to say it themselves. Sod off.zarb0z

    • Are you a hermaphrodite? What postcode are you in and how does it not allow you peace of mind as others exactly? Is the 90210 codes to blame?

    "America the Mediocre

Americans think they’re No. 1. They’re wrong in so many ways."

"For many Americans, the proposition that they live in the most powerful, richest, and most advanced society on Earth is something close to a statement of faith.

A 2017 Pew Research Center poll found that most Americans disagree only whether the United States is the best country in the world (29 percent) or one of the best (56 percent). Only 14 percent of Americans agree instead that there are other, better countries.

Elites agree, too. Forget the current president’s flag-humping rhetoric—even the cool and cerebral Barack Obama said it was “objectively” true that the United States holds “the best cards of any country on Earth.”

That might be the case in a game of geopolitical Risk, where the cards that count are military strength and overall GDP.

But in ordinary life, it’s harder to make the case for America as No. 1. The rest of the world is developing and adopting policies that can make everyday life in the United States, outside of a few coastal oases, seem ... old.

Even backward. And the U.S. reluctance, or inability, to learn from other countries is making life worse for its citizens than it has to be—not just in the big ways, such as the disasters of American health care and student debt, but in the little, everyday ones, too."
