Probably behind a pay wall, but ... yeah, now we're talking.
'Canada giving itself power to turn over seized assets to victims'
https://www.theglobeandmail.com/…
From the article:
'[...] the Canadian government says it plans to give itself the power to sell off assets of foreigners seized under sanctions law, and then turn them over to affected victims or pay for rebuilding war-torn countries.
This could mean, for instance, that funds or property seized from Russia could be paid out to help reconstruct Ukraine or to compensate those affected by Moscow’s military assault on its neighbour.
The change would make Canada the first among Group of Seven countries to allow such actions.'
- When this is all done, Russia's giving all of its hydrocarbon profits for the next decade(s) to rebuild Ukraine.Nairn
- With any luck, anyway.Continuity
- What happens if Russia breaks up into smaller countries? Which one is to be held responsibledrgs
- There's always a success state, e.g.:
Yugoslavia > SerbiaContinuity - *successorContinuity
- after the war is over ukraine buys new stuff from the west with assets the west seized from russia?uan
- I'm starting to think, this war is the trigger to destroy the global financial system as we know it.uan
- About as much as covid was a ruse to force everyone into a cashless society..Nairn
- Don't get excited yet. This bill also targets cryptocurrency and NFTs and allows the government to compel "“any person to provide ...any information”monNom
- Which is a pretty big departure from the narrow framing of "selling seized russian assets".monNom
- I mean, how do you find "russian owned" crypto? It's anonymous. The only way would be to de-anonymize it by forcing Canadians to claim ownership of their tokensmonNom
- I think crypto is (probably) bullshit, but this government sure does like to give itself extra-judicial powers.monNom
- crypto you hold in a bank or trading platform isn't anonymous. but you can store it in the blockchain yourself, refuse to tell the passphrase and keep it.uan

Russian soldiers are increasingly rioting and refusing to return to combat zones. This is especially true of those Russians who were sent to regroup after their units suffered a crushing defeat.

This special operation has been one big feast of corruption
Not only did Putin's FSB officers convince him about Russophile sentiment in Ukraine, but that there are underground pro-Russian guerrilla groups ready to spring into action. And these guerrilla groups need funding! On top of that, more money is needed to bribe local Ukrainian officials.
Of course there were no guerrillasPutin spent billions of dollars on what he thought would be the smoothest military operation ever, Russian soldiers being met with praise and flowers etc. I argue that for Putin this was a prerequisite to start the attack.
This is also my argument to say that Putin is not an evil dictator, just a clueless dupe, soft-spoken, stuttering beta-male who is completely unfit for his role, who trusted everyone like a blind kitten and has been exploited by everyone in his circle.
*puts tin foil hat on* Or maybe even he was put in presidency exactly for this purpose. Putin did not come to power through elections, he was appointed as acting president after Yeltsin's resignations. He won the elections which followed, but Russians will vote for whoever is already in charge anyway.
Russia died in 1991 and has been decaying for the last 30 years. There are conspiracy theories which say that real population in Russia is down to 90 mill, not the official 140 mill.

Russia’s most famous journalists and “experts” saying on state TV that nuclear war with NATO maybe wouldn’t be that bad after all since the Russians will go to heaven, while the Westerners go to hell.
- colin_s-10
this is america's favorite war because it is profitable to weapons manufacturers, good for presidential approval rating and we can fight russia without having to care when soldiers die. plus since nobody understands sanctions, when economic turmoil trickles down to everyday russians then it doesn't matter. a real winner all around.
i see shit like "how ukraine is winning the war" and it's like well they have billions of dollars of weapons just dropped on them and the CIA, NSA and who knows else feeding them info. no shit they're looking better than expected. how stupid can people be to accept the narrative of the mainstream media, it's like 2003-2006 iraq all over again.
- (i should say "having to pretend to care")colin_s
- no it's not. Iraq never pretended to be part of the civilized world, Russia did.pr2
- Here comes Colin again. So what’s your point? Let Russia commit war crimes and destroy another country in Europe because of their imperial dreams?NBQ00
- And what exactly is surprising about the west supplying weapons? Do you want Russia to win and enslave Ukraine and invade more countries?NBQ00
- It's such a weird mentality some people have that because USA started wars in the past, now they gonna cheer on Russia as it does same thing to Ukraine.yuekit
- In reality of course USA and Europe spent weeks begging Putin not to invade...how does this any make sense if they wanted war?yuekit
- A week before the invasion..."Biden made an impassioned appeal to Russian President Vladimir Putin to step back from war"
https://archive.ph/j…yuekit - America's favourite war is the war on drugs, because it has never ended. Also from what you've said it sounds like you want Russia to win? either way, dumb postBuddhaHat
- I don't think the US should be world police. I think we have no right to call out Russia for war crimes. And I think the US sending untold billions to Ukraine..colin_s
- ..as this country is rotting, people are in need and the gov't is spending nothing on social services is a crime against the people who live here.colin_s
- Ukraine isn't even part of NATO and the US has no obligation to do this - they are doing it purely to maintain the military industrial complex. Every country iscolin_s
- able to make its own decisions, including the ones we don't like. We're funding a genocide in Yemen and Flint still has no drinking water. Fuck this countrycolin_s
- I'm not pro-Putin, I'm anti-war. Cheering this shit on is insane to me.colin_s
- Armenia needs help too...but that isn't on repeat in the mainstream media.BabySnakes
- The US is still the wealthiest nation on earth, funding war and funding drinking water in Flint aren't mutually exclusive. They could do both if they wanted to.BuddhaHat
- And the absence of war wouldn't get those same govt people to fund drinking water in Flint. Were they making any headway before war kicked off? No.BuddhaHat
- What BS, colin. I'm anti-war too but this war has huge implications on entire Europe if Russia gets away with it.NBQ00
- It's not just the US sending weapons and money. Just because Ukraine isn't in NATO doesn't mean we can't supply them with weapons to defend themselves.NBQ00
- Thanks to Russia invading Ukr, now more countries want to be part of NATO and MIC is profiting massively due to upgrades of military everywhere.NBQ00
- colin. what's the alternative?pango
- Just because the US maybe benefiting from the war doesn’t mean that what Russia is doing isn’t terrible.Chimp
- "the gov't is spending nothing on social services" This is just completely wrong. Since Biden came into office he has spent over $3 trillion on additionalyuekit
- public spending, first on the COVID relief bill then on a bill to upgrade infrastructure across the country. Total spending on Ukraine a few billion, spendingyuekit
- on USA (on top of normal spending) over 3,000 billion. Trump also passed multiple trillion dollar bills during the COVID pandemic. So cmon, at least get theyuekit
- facts right, seem like you are just working off vague impressions here.yuekit
- @collins I get your point on the US' hypocrisy. But what do you think China and Russia would do without the US being the world police?Chimp
- I agree the US needs to sort out its social services, but it can do both. Hey that's corporate greed for you.Chimp

Russia deploys trained dolphins at Black Sea naval base, satellite images show

Simonyan predicts that Putin will go the route of World War III and use nukes: https://twitter.com/SamRamani2/s…
Sore losers just want to go for the nuclear route if they can't win on the battlefield.

Unless they go all out, I think that Russia using a nuke in the role of an aggressor state will lead to a worldwide banning of ALL nuclear weapons.
Either that, or outright proliferation.
It was at the time acceptable for the States to use nukes over Japan, but the same mentality now would not be tenable, never mind for a state that is actively offensive.
Time to move on - Russia's a backward-looking laggard, of no use in its current form to the greater world.
- hasn't russia always been that?hans_glib
- Hiroshima and Nagasaki lead to... even more Nukes! Russia uses a nuke -> every country will fall over themselves to acquire more Nukes or become nuke virgins.shapesalad

Report by a British think tank on current state of the conflict. The authors claim to be drawing partly on a set of leaked documents from the Russian government.
Some interesting details on Russia's failures so far but they make a disturbing prediction: Putin may use the May 9 victory day celebration not as a deadline to end the conflict, but to officially declare war and start mobilizing a larger fighting force.
