Greta Gerwig on Outraged Conservatives Burning Barbies
The 'Barbie' director gave her take on the right-wing backlash to the blockbuster film during an interview with the New York Times

Greta Gerwig’s Barbie grossed a record-breaking $155 million domestically — and $377 million internationally — in its first weekend. The blockbuster film also crushed right-wing efforts to boycott the film for its “man-hating” and “woke feminism,” and Barbie has since driven her pink Corvette over the delicate egos of outraged conservatives to score the biggest film debut of 2023.

While Gerwig didn’t anticipate the right-wing backlash, she continues to maintain that Barbie is for all. “Certainly, there’s a lot of passion,” the director told The New York Times when asked about conservatives who have taken to publicly burning Mattel dolls in protest. “My hope for the movie is that it’s an invitation for everybody to be part of the party and let go of the things that aren’t necessarily serving us as either women or men.”

She continued, “I hope that in all of that passion, if they see it or engage with it, it can give them some of the relief that it gave other people.”

“He Seems Wounded”: John Oliver Responds After Elon Musk Said His Comedy Is Woke “Weak Sauce”

John Oliver has issued a typically playful response to Elon Musk after the billionaire X owner appeared to take umbrage with being roasted by the British comedian.

Last Week Tonight With John Oliver, which clinched another Emmy on Monday night, flamed Musk in a section last month, with Oliver joking that he “could pull off any bad guy in a movie.”

A couple of weeks later, Musk argued that the “otherwise capable” Oliver had become “weak sauce” in a post on the social media site formerly known as Twitter.

It’s an odd situation we find ourselves in, that both the woke left and the far right simultaneously feel like the they’re persecuted or the minority. American society is quite progressive but also it manages to keep a lot of safe spaces for the conservative folks. Yet both groups feel so hard done by. And it isn’t justified. My friends on the left don’t seem to notice how much influence they have or have had as a group over the past 20 years. The Left is the dominant voice in society but they still whine and have a “life isn’t fair to us” perspective.

The people on the right aren’t persecuted, but they definitely aren’t the dominant influence in society. So why is the left so angry? They’re winning the culture war! Is it because when you’ve historically been the underdog you never lose that mentality?

    • the people on the right just want to be left alone and carry on the way they always have and are threatened by change which typically comes from the left._niko
    • the people on the left just want to be left alone and carry on doing new shit and are threatened by resistance to change which typically comes from the right._niko
    • I think the right feels under assault because they perceive the left as controlling the media and culture...which is sometimes true but what did you expect?yuekit

    • If we don't fight back, we will be run by Evangelical Christians. It's not polarization, it's seeing a problem and pointing it out.garbage
    • It absolutely IS a both sides thing. You are doing exactly what you claim ‘the other side’ are doing. And by defining them as an enemy with a problem that you...Morning_star
    • ...seem to be unwilling to understand or engage with, you are polarising them. It’s not ever as black and white as you seem to be portraying and as Sun Tzu...Morning_star
    • ..pointed out, if you don’t understand both yourself and your enemy you will lose.Morning_star
    • The weird part is you don't even seem to understand that "woke" is an old American term that goes back to the 30s, you know, when segregation still existed.garbage
    • Being woke meant being aware that the systems of power are being actively leveled against you. Conservatives in America are now using that as insult.garbage

    • I don't think being in the middle means you are always undecided between any two things.yuekit
    • It’s perfectly possible that this is just me interpreting things differently this election race. But, I can’t ever remember seeing such bemoan from both sides,Morning_star
    • Bemoan = venomMorning_star
    • Particularly when Jan 6 is forefront in a lot of people’s minds.Morning_star
    • It's certainly true that if you follow right-wingers (and I do follow some of them, I even work w/ Trump supporters), they seem to think Biden is terrible.yuekit
    • But just because peoples' impressions are strong on both sides doesn't mean the two candidates are actually equally bad or extreme.yuekit
    • Trump is objectively much more of a departure from the norm of US politics, in a bad way I'd say.yuekit

    • Bookmakers are just reacting to the polls, more of which show a tie or small Trump lead. But some show a Biden lead.yuekit
    • I wouldn't be confident predicting the outcome at this point. As far as who's more extreme and how many, a recent poll found that a third of Republicansyuekit
    • think violence is justified to fulfill their political goals, vs. just over 1 in 10 Democrats.yuekit
    • I'd guess the number that would actually engage in violence is much smaller but the troubling thing is how many seem willing to go along w/ it.yuekit
    • But is "Sleepy Joe" Biden the cause of the violence and radicalism? :) No it's obviously Trump. You aren't really being neutral if you can't admit that.yuekit
    • Being neutral or moderate doesn't mean perpetually staying at the center point between any two things. What if it's Hugo Chavez vs David Cameron?yuekit
    • Or Putin vs. Olaf Scholz? Kind of random examples but you get the idea. Trump is the destabilizing force in this case.yuekit
