    @hans glib

i totally see what youre saying. if it doesnt fit in your pocket, then its in a bag in which case it could well be a DSLR instead.

But the biggest factor is the weight. The difference is ridiculous. i made this point to a qbner a while back comparing a micro four thirds against a d5000, and the m43 system was a fraction above half the weight of the d5000 iirc.

    • and then the smaller lens diameter makes each lens a lot lighter too.Hombre_Lobo

    @ Hans glib & @Hombre lobo

I think you both have valid points. I am going to reserve judgment until I can get a hold of the Lumix G3 however if I did feel it were still to big do you reckon the Olympus XZ1 is the best of the smaller options? Went and had a look at one of them over lunch and was quite nice (especially for the price).

    • Yeh from what I've seen the xz1 is superior to all compacts. Brightest lens at all lengths, and best high iso. Plus oly jpegs are great.Hombre_Lobo
  • Atkinson0

    s95 beats the xz1 imo

    • Why? The s95 is stunning, but the xz1 has it beat in all areas. The xz1 is larger though.Hombre_Lobo

I'm looking at some small cameras with a flash shoe....

Does anyone who has an XZ1 or similar camera find the flash shoe snags on the edge of your pocket?

Googling the XZ1 indicates nice, has RAW, but jpegs over-compensate for noise at higher ISO's causing the megapixel mush I'm familiar with... well, it's smaller than a DSLR with a F2.8 zoom....

    • the xz1 should come with a plastic hot shoe cover (slides in) that would prevent it from catching.Hombre_Lobo
    • thanks!

I will probably lose the plastic cover though(!)

Lately, just use my iPhone or a Canon Elf. Even used an Elf for print once, worked out just fine. Compact and affordable.

  • non0

    Absolutely love my Nikon P300.

  • Atkinson0

I had the xz1 for a while. the lens cap is v annoying. Its not pocket sized - too big. The lens is huge for a compact, the jpegs are terrible in comparison with the canon and the raws are similar. Low light was no better than the canon and the stabilizer worse imo.

  • microkorg0

What about a truly pocket-sized SLR?

I saw one of these overpriced in a local camera shop. You can grab them on e-Bay with the full range of lenses available.
Drawback is that 110 film is getting rare and it's expensive to get developed.

A bit of a novelty/fun camera or 'talking point' - but, wow, what a feat of precision engineering! I love the grain of this film and the examples that folk have posted up to Flickr.

    • 110 film sucks dinosaur ass.... I worked in a lab in the 90's and had to print that stuff... argh!vaxorcist
    • yes... the massive grain can be cool... minolta also had a 110 SLR camera....vaxorcist
    • will check out the minolta.
i love the grain of film if used well.

^^^ you can get converters to use the Pentax Auto 110 lenses on Micro FourThird cameras :) hehe.

    • ha cool. you an get adapters to use almost any lens on m43! its mental.Hombre_Lobo

Picked up the Canon S95 about a week ago. Love the thing.

Decent quality pics, working the lens ring is a delight, and the came is in an almost solid build.

My only gripe is that the lens ring feels a bit plastic in comparison to the rest of the body. But it's something I can live with.

    @Intelliboy

in reply to our conversation -
[someone posted an image of an x100]
Hombre:"iirc an olympus pen+20mm produces better images, even in low light."
intelliboy:"hombre you are so wrong on that one..."

I just thought i'd check it out and the olympus pen epl2 @iso 3200, is similar to the x100 @iso 3200, with (to my eyes) the x100 being only slightly better.

However the base iso images are much sharper with more contrast, on the e-pl2.

    see for yourself -

(choose the desired camera model from the drop down)

The x100 is marginally better at high iso, but not by much particularly given the sensor differences.

And When you consider that the x100 has a f2 lens, and the panasonic 20mm pancake is f1.7, the e-pl2 + 20mm will be extremely comparable, perhaps even better than the x100 in low light.

Just thought its worth letting you know in case your looking at the x100, it might save you some money.

Honestly, since everything goes online, nothing beats the convenience of:

    +

    or

you shoot, manipulate and upload in a matter of seconds. Everything else is so cumbersome.

    • indeedt. i love my camera phone, but that's for convenience, not quality.Hombre_Lobo

    Hombre_Lobo,
Cheers for all your advice in this thread. Been a great help.

I watched a good comparison video on youtube of the GF2 and EPL-2. The guy kept jokingly mistakedly calling them the GF1 and EPL-1 because there isn't much difference between updates.

His conclusion was that the cameras were both pretty similar but the Olympus was a bit more 'fun' because of the effects filters, and the Panasonic was more of a 'serious' camera.

The EPL-2 has the ability to use two of these effects at the same time and you can also customise these to how you want them which is pretty cool and could save hours of tweaking pics in photoshop.

At the moment i've got a Ricoh GX100 with a hood and Nikon Wide lens thats ALWAYS on there. I want to get a better quality camera and both series of the Olympus and Panasonic are definitely better.

The Olympus is of interest because of the new Wide Angle & Fisheye adapters that can be added to the standard lens.
I'm going to phone a shop to confirm the new adapter can be added to the newer EPL-1 14-42mm lenses. I saw a post on flickr that said it will fit certain ones.

As well as wanting a good camera, I don't want it to be stupidly expensive so that i'd shun from taking it out all the time so that's why i'm thinking of going for the 1st series of one of these cameras.
And at the moment it's the Olympus that's favourite.

    http://www.parkcameras.com
    EPL2 with 14-42mm = £469!
    EPL1 with 14-42mm = £279! bloody bargain for what you're getting!

Still on the fence which to get. I hate decisions like this!

I was the same before I got the Ricoh GX100.
Originally I was after the GRDI/II to replace my Lomo LC-A+ but opted for the GX100 because it had the zoom.

  • Hombre_Lobo0

    @23kon

no prob mate, im pleased my excessive procrastinating geekiness helps anyone.

i know so little of the ricoh cameras, but that GX100 looks pretty cool.

Yeh the wide angle and fish eye and macro for the oly 14-42mm lens look ace. i hope they arent expensive as i paid £30 on ebay for a high quality, like-new Olympus A-28 0.8x WA converter.

Oh man the e-pl1 is ridiculous value. its stills are amazing for the money, slightly sharper (for the pixel peepers) than the gf1 and gf2 thanks to the lighter AA filter on the sensor.

However i much prefer the gf1 because of how different they feel. I'd almost say go for the E-pl2, only because i know i couldn't be happy with the e-pl1, it doesn't feel right to me, the buttons, the case etc. Plus the e-pl2 has a much better screen.

BUT a big thing to consider is, are you going to purchase the EVF? -

    (the thing on top :P)

If you are, the price difference between the e-pl1 and e-pl2 will buy it! which negates the lower resolution screen of the e-pl1.

if your not gonna buy the evf, buy this, the original e-p1 -

reason being is its metal body unlike the epl1 plastic body, better buttons, feels better and it has a 3 inch screen vs a 2.7 inch screen of the e-pl1 (this seems like a big difference in person). The e-pl1 will however take very slightly sharper pics, but i would have guessed you wouldn't even notice the difference.

you can get a refurbished one on ebay for £230, but i'd highly recommend you apply this skin to make it look even more classy and retro -

    hope that helps :)

    • (ignore that sharpness comment of e-p1 vs e-pl1, its true, but so small its irrelevant)Hombre_Lobo
  • Hombre_Lobo0

and also, sadly, i know exactly which video your talking about, its the digital rev, that guy is quite good, blunt and practical. Theres another video of his older than the one your talking about comparing the e-pl1, gf1 and samsung nx10 thats worth watching too.

it highlights one of the main differences between the oly pen and gf1 models (the focus speed). But remember the focus speed is 85% down to the panasonic lumix lenses being faster, so if you put a lumix lens on an oly body its focus speed improves so that its very very nearly as fast as a lumix body with a lumix lens.

  • 23kon0

I couldn't see myself getting the viewfinder for the olympus.
There's one for the Ricoh's that i've never bought.

The wide angle convertors for the olympus cameras are about £130 (ouch!). I wonder if I can get the Nikon WC-E69 (0.68x) to fit that I use all the time on my Ricoh GX100.

Think i'm going to get myself along to jessops to handle both the Olympus cameras to see which I prefer. The older one would mean I could spend more on lenses :)
Prob give the panasonic a go too.

In the meantime i've bought a wee 35mm to keep me happy.
    Minox 35GT

    • minox comes with flash addition too :)23kon
    • these minox beasties tend to blow shutters, so get it checked out...vaxorcist

    Hombre Lobo,

Have you seen the new Panasonic GF3?

Some great deals out there with pre-order and extra lenses on this camera!

  • pinkfloyd0

Is the Canon 30D any good? I had this camera for close to 3 years but haven't really used it. Can it take professional photos?

  • Hombre_Lobo0

^ha, I'm touched you thought of me upon hearing the news!

Is it kinda cool, but as its a more p&s orientated camera it lacks the mode dial of the gf1 and sacrifices some buttons.

that and a pancake lens does make a killer portable fixed lens set up. But with the standard kit lens 14-42mm, it would feel quite unbalanced. Im happy with the size of my gf1, it becomes troublesome in terms of ergonomics if you get much smaller (for me).

I am excited about the g3 though, high iso jpegs as good as a 600d / t3i! Awesome.
