Client idea is bad?

A client want me to do a poster for an event she's hosting.
It's a charity event to raise money for a person with cancer and she wants a big realistic illustration of the person on the poster. I did one version with that and also one that was more abstract and typographic. She clearly wants the illustration, but I think it's too literal and kind of strange to put it on it. The person is still alive.
Is it my job to try to convince her to do something more interesting? Or do I just do what she asks, because it's not going in my portfolio anyways.

Tell her if she wants a realistic illustration of the person, then you might as well just go with a photograph. No use in doing the illustration (unless she is paying you the money for the many hours you'll be spending on it).

Is it paid gig? If its discounted job its always good to barter for creativity and more control over the project... Best you can do is tell her your opinion with best possible explanation for your solution and if she objects, then you can take a picture and use a photoshop filter such as watercolor or something to make it an illustration in 3 seconds.

i have been in a similar situation. there was a color snapshot of the person in action and an illustration i made earlier. i advised the client to use neither. the poster i then created was based on a decent studio photography i treated with desaturated dichromatic tones. so it was sort of illustrated and bold but without the catchiness of an illustrator's interpretative style.
- in this case the client thanked me for thinking and explaining - you can't always expect that, though.arne

The client's ideas are always bad.

run it by her. If she disagrees, do what you need to do to get paid.

make it work.

do what she says. do what you think is right. explain why you think yours is better. If she still wants hers then there's not much you can do. At least she sees that you were into the job enough to try other things.
- So do double the work for same price? We're designers, not a charity.Presta
