I once saw a design exercise which the designer hired another designer to do. The hired designer later applied for the same job and showed it as a portfolio piece.

Honestly I've been never asked to do something like this. One would think that after a detailed explanation of your portfolio pieces, the strategy and thought behind the work during the interview where everybody has the opportunity to question anything related to the work or share vital information regarding the position to be filled will be enough.
I have enough experience to spot bull-shit, but in this case everything has been different I think tomorrow will be the decisive day after the meeting/brief.

I can't believe some of you are talking about working for free... even a mechanic wouldn't go for that shit. Try to imagine ANY other professional being asked to work for free and the resulting answer.
- If you told a mechanic you'd give him a good salary if he did a good job, he might.freedom

get paid for it

personal choice, if they want the job, they try for it.
you try out as an athlete and see if you made the cut

if they have any respect for you, they'd pay you for your time. if you had any respect for yourself, you would tell them you need to be paid.
- really depends on who has the upper hand or more ego.2002
- not really. at all. it's called integrity.doesnotexist
- usually that doesnt last long when you are hungry2002
- You're both correct.OSFA

we do this too but we pay them.
- < this is the professional way and I am sure this is what is being asked. No way they are asking for free work days.capn_ron

I might be too naive but...
You're willing to be paid yearly by them but can't give away 2days? Refusing a test -even non paid- seems pretty short view to me.
And to me it shows the interest you have in the job position.- It didn't occur to me you weren't being paid. That does not reflect well on them.CyBrainX

I've done it and gotten paid.

It might be they just want to get to know you in a less formal interview way. You might get a tour and meet team members an so on. You might not be working at all. I say check it out. You will know right away what their MO is.

I did a design test several years ago, and they were suppose to pay for it. They never did!

I walk into restaurants all the time and say "listen, this will be sort of a working interview. I'm going to eat a steak for free so I can get a feel if we would be a good fit together, for future dinning experiences I may have, if this turns out to be a good steak."
I am currently banned from eating in Illinois.
- will you be hiring the restaurant for full time?2002
- It didn't work out. I didn't tell them how I wanted the steak cooked. I like medium-rare. He gave me medium-well.kona
- so you are looking to hire a restaurant full time for all your meals?2002
- Shame... they could've gotten a ton of exposure...OSFA
- If they thought they might get 80k a year from you, they might give you a free steak.freedom

when you are selecting a wedding cake or catering, some places charge for sampling and others dont.

So, this is happening tomorrow?

Could be wanting to see what computer knowledge you have. So many bs things to get the job, then think they'll 'fake it till you make it'.
