flash, to me, is tool for branding. people who prefer as little branding in their pages as possible don't use flash.
- kpl0
then again, design in general, especially in aesthetics, is a tool for branding.

actually Kenny G really sucks as a person too
jk he's prolly kewl
- arlo0
How is flash a branding tool? If you put an audio player on a site, is that branding?
- freshmode0
it is if you are using audio in your brand...
JK.
I didn't get that either.
=/
- kpl0
everything is branding. anything that affects the relationship between the audience and the brand is branding.
and yes, putting audio on your site is branding. go to the sean john website, close your eyes. then do the same for triple 5 soul. you don't need to see the sites to see what the difference between the brands are.
- freshmode0
you do if their is no audio!!!
JK.
Your point is true. But how does that relate to the topic?
- kote0
listen kids - you guys are missing the whole picture first of all. Design is about communicating ideas....and that being said, flash is just a super dynamic way of expressing ideas.
And I will give $100 to the first programmer that can duplicate this url with just javascript in the same amount of time:
now you see my point. it is just a medium. If you dont like the medium, dont use it. If it is not right for your client or audience, dont use it.
personally I love the interaction it allows. when a consumer interacts with a brand in a great and positive way it creates a loyalty like no other. true, there is a lot of crap out there produced by people that dont know what they are doing. there are also a lot of people that cant do a front kick correctly...the truth will land them on thier asses if they cant walk the walk that they talk.
- freshmode0
kote....
that was great!!!
I agree. Do that in JavaScript. And even if it did get done, which would be quicker and more efficient?
Just one thing. Everyone should stop calling each other kids. Everyone uses it; I think it is apparent that no one is a kid. Well... actually... never mind!
SUCK IT EASY!

ahh - jesko - I remember you. we have had discussions before...
- arlo0
In that sense, anything associated with any concept is a brand. This thread is burnt.
- freshmode0
gotta keep it gangsta in this biatch!!!!
YIATCH!!!

flash doesn't have much point except for branding. that and web applications...but it's not really used all much for that.
you can brand with text, but text also conveys other types of info. flash haters would say that info is more important than branding.
not that I'm disparaging flash. flash is probably more effective in branding than just copy & static images. and branding is important.
- arlo0
So are graphics and text in html NOT branding? I don't quite understand.
- freshmode0
lets get off the "branding" wagon.
Lets stay on the topic. If vena isn't going to moderate, I will. Besides, me and vena make a good pair. Ehh vena? =)
once again, WHY DO YOU HATE FLASH?
- clint0
i think flash is great, i do most of my projects in flash, and have no problems selling it to clients, and i am being very successful at it. combined with xml, there is now limit to what you can do with it... it's up to you, if you think you hate it, then well, nothing good will come out of it, it's like saying you hate your paint brush...
- freshmode0
hmmm
i don't have a paint brush...
=/
I agree. Stop hatin!!!

Arlo,
kpl didn't express himself properly. Flash plays a significant role in online branding because it allows serious designers to express the brand in more unique way, using motion and animation, while html has limitations. DHTML is the one that in some ways comes close to flash but there are serious issues when considering cross-browser compatibility.
As for why people hate flash, well, I guess it's because of designers out there that avoid getting into usability, using flash motion abilities to create completely useless sites.
Flash is a very very powerful tool. Most people who dislike flash obviously haven't had a chance to understand flash inside and out. There are so many implementations of flash that show its superiority over everything else.
Flash 'developers' use Flash/ColdFusionMX to build extremely user-friendly web sites while Flash 'designers' use it to describe client brand in much more appealing way.I personally enjoy using Flash while building complete web sites, but also use it as a part of html/flash combination.
It's not just motion and shape tweening :)
Wow, I can't believe you read all this.
Cheers :)

boz... any relation to boz boorer?

Flash: 99% bad
http://www.useit.com/alertbox/20… this is an article that anyone using flash should read - it's 2.5 years old and became a real turning point in flash design and implementation - the points are still valid, all technical problems fixed in MX, and the author now works for Macromedia...
Important stuff...
