We are all a bit challenged...in a way.
:D

since we've discussed the issue of mishandling flash...
when it comes to SWF, what do you guys consider is too big?5MB? 7MB? 10MB?
I've been guilty of this.
Where do you draw a line?
- 4cY0
animation within html: 300k.
Full site: 1mb.
but that's just me..
- ok_static0
maximum 2mb.
one side note the new prinnt site knocks me off everytime with their 10.2mb audio SWF.
- monoblanco0
this is what i'm saying...
portfolio: 2mb or less.
but what if i have a motiongraphics swf piece as a separate entity that is 6mb?
or 10 who cares?
this is intended for people with the bandwith.i do not consider that to be necessarely inneficient.
- ok_static0
anyway it should be a big warn you for anything that's 1mb+
many folks still suffer from 56k modems...

let's keep it real here.
i hate flash because my ass is too dumb to figure the shit out.

i tried to avoid flash for the longest time, but i just harmed myself in the process. it seemed daunting and intimidating so i postponed learning it. now i can't imagine websites any other way, and it really isn't *that* hard. the complex actionscript i still hate, but it's a necessary evil. and if you can get a programmer to do that shit for you, then it's no biggie. so yes, i used to hate it because my ass was too dumb to figure it out. it still is for some complex stuff, but how else do you learn?
as far as what's too big speaking of file size, i'll tell you since i still use a 56k modem (yeah i know). if i get to a site, and there's no preloader that tells me how long i have to wait, i leave. if the site looks promising or is highly recommended or i have a real need to look at it, i'll stay with 500k, but i better not see another preloader after that. anything over 600k, i just ignore. fuck that. people that have broadband, think everyone else does. that's just self centered and bad design. of course, i respect the fact that different target audiences react need different stuff. if your portfolio has a reel, i of course don't expec that to be 60k.flash is the shit. i love it. but i do hate the poor use of it. just like i hate the poor use of photoshop.

i love flash
i just suck at it

i don't quite understand that download time argument thing, ie, if i, as a designer, wanted to use a cool font non existent to all systems in html, i had to use gifs, which were still pictures and could not be updated by any cms database system, but i could embed that font in flash, and make it dynamic via xml and connect that by php or asp... i think a lot of people here haven't quite grasped what flash is capable of, and i'll better shut up and make the most out of my niche.
goodbye flash haters!

yes, clint!
Good point. There are ways of using flash and still make it accessible for the challenged, too few people use this possibility though.
Good sources for Flash Usability:

yes, and blind people can't read gifs either, then you've got to use the alt tag in html, if you were concerned with your flash project, just set up some alternative simple text html files as well... doesn't take long, not much longer than alt tags. i'm not saying html is bad, it's about seeing the benefits for which platform for your projects...

but can you can only use these things with the latest player. (or you include your own functions)
what I can't understand is that revision thing. Why does Macromedia have to make 65 revision of that damn player, why ?
Aren't they the only one making the swf player, and even the "composer" ?
- freshmode0
PuFFi..
Adobe makes a product called livemotion.
and they are the only one's with the flash player. But, why do people "revise" their own websites. Because change comes. That shouldn't be an issue.
I am glad I brought up this topic. Most of the people that hate flash, hate it because they are just negative about everything in general.
I have another for the people. I am sure I will get shit for it. But I have to let it be known!!!
YIATCHES!!!

I like flash, but I dislike that you can't call internal functions from dynamic text (eg: calling javascript from an anchor)
I don't like the fact that there's no decent, scalable markup within it that's accessable from outside (say I wanted to have a horizontal rule, or an image float in a paragraph... it would take a ton of work to do it in flash.)
I'd like to see them integrate most, if not all, of HTML markup into the flash player.
I'd LOVE to be able to spit out a table from a PHP script and have it display in flash.a convergence of technologies is what's needed to make flash a REAL powerhouse.
I find the MX interface uncomfortable.
- PuFFi0
sure, livemotion, who uses livemotion ? is there a point of using it ?
And why do you make a new version of the software every year and don't even think about a finished player.
Can you explain me why 65 revisions ? if it were only 10...
when you make a website you have to be sure that the target has the flash mx player but they still need the latest version because what you are using doesn't work with the standard one, damn.
I really like flash, it's amazing, easy and useful but I regret the player thing.
- clint0
monnom, i agree with the html table picture text flow sorts, i had to workd around that quite a lot.
but i tought you might find this helpful, you can actually call as function with the anchor tag in html style text in flash, i use it quite a lot, check this link out: http://www.macromedia.com/suppor…
