yes in deed....

yeah, that 99% flash crap article, but what the authore tend to forget are the 99% crap html sites out there...
then again, all i can say, i agree, a lot of bad flash sites out there, but what does it mean? nothing. if you are able to design a great website, then your client will benefit from it, you will make money, and you will get a lot of hits, and then, what do i care if 99% of 'flash designer' can't adhere to those standards? it's not my problem, i am still doing pretty well with my flash sites, and a lot more business coming in, and hardly any complaint. all those talks about pro or again flash/html is a total misconception, it's about what works best for you, and understanding your tools.

boz, love the music, saw him play with morrissey several times!

After discovering the potential of Flash + PHP + MySQL i must say that i haven't done that much stuff related to HTML.
I still like to do HTML mini sites though. In fact, when coding this sites i'm getting more and more minimalistic about it....
Anyway it's invetable. Internet will be more and more a multimedia non-static environment. That's not bad. It's just a different approach towards information gathering.
Evolution baby!....

boz,
thanks for helping out. i'm trying to keep my posts as concise as possible and it looks like it's too concise.
ok, so my point is that flash is mostly useful for the "feel" of a site. and to come down to it, when I say feel, I mean emotional aspects and ideas. ie. if you want to say your beer has less carbs, then text will do. if you want to say beer makes you look sexy, you can't just say it, you need to show it--with slo mo pics of naked chicks or something. you state facts, you demonstrate emotions. and you demonstrate with music, animations, colors, pictures, etc.
now, the type of people most adverse to flash are those people who don't feel emotion is important to web design at all. (see jn.)
ok, when I went off on branding, I got sidetracked. I should have said emotional branding (or something like that). but that phrase probably would have wiped out half of kni's staff.
You know, I'm going to stop reading the wall street journal. yeah. that's it.

and one more thing:
straight html is still better for conveying text than flash, for many reasons.
- clint0
then again, it depends what you want to do with your text...
- freshmode0
i agree with clint.
why is htlm better? Personaly, I would like to see the same quality that I get when I do print media, when I go to web. Vector is nice and I would rather my text be in vectors.
Once again, the answer will always be subjective.
I ROCK FRESH MODE

I hate Flash because it's not an open standard. I hate Flash because it is a product of a corporation made specifically to sell its tools.
I hate Flash because I had to download a 6 meg plugin at work just to refresh PV-AN.
I hate Flash because Macromedia has almost no support for my favourite operating system.
I hate Flash because it's slow.
I hate Flash because to a serious programmer ActionScript is a joke.
I hate Flash because of 2Advanced.
I hate Flash because poor people with slow connections and slow computers are not taken into account,
I hate Flash because it is not SWF.
I love Flash because it gets me work.
- kpl0
short answer: the web was made for html.
long answer: you can cmd/ctrl-f search html. you can put it in google. you don't need a plug-in. browsers handle text better than flash. css can layout text just as good or better than flash. you don't need flash to edit html, and can be edited by anyone. html is more accessible across many different platforms, including non-visual ones. html is simple and easy to use.
- paulrand0
I hate it because it looks and works more or less the same in different browsers
- unfittoprint0
"6 meg plugin"?
"I hate Flash because to a serious programmer ActionScript is a joke."?
"I hate Flash because it's slow."?
"I hate Flash because of 2Advanced."?
"I hate Flash because poor people with slow connections and slow computers are not taken into account"?
It's all relative. I like Flash because you don't.

i do as much of my work as possible in flash now. i think the flash player is common enough now that the only misuse of flash is flash that ignores bandwidth restrictions, or is used as an excuse for poor design...
and i dont want to offend, but i think a lot of the designers that 'hate' flash just havent been able to pick it up. If I was a print designer just getting my head around html/css, i might hate it too. the same way i hated second year calculus.
i think flash is as cross browser as any other technology/language we have, and i really feel the plugin deal is a non-issue.
in the end, i really think it comes down to the designers preferences, and strong points... there are definitely sites that shouldnt use flash, but there are a lot of html/css sites that could be done better using flash too.

just because something CAN move, doesn't mean it SHOULD. lots of flash abuse could be prevented by contemplating this.

"i do as much of my work as possible in flash now"
remember many disabled people can't read flash...think of your target audience...
http://www.rnib.org.uk/digital/h…
btw:
Good one about tables:"Text based browsers generally can't display tables in the same way as graphical browsers. Usually, they will display the content cell by cell and row by row. As a result of this, it is important that you ensure that the page makes sense if the table content is presented in this "de-columnised" way."
(imagine: it really sucks if your blind....al those sites that give zero result on their "screens")
At least think of a simple textbased alternative, or a CSS alternative (redir)..
And validate! That's what it's for.

"remember many disabled people can't read flash...think of your target audience..."
i was under the impression that if the text is selectable, it could be read by disabled web enhancement apparatuses?
i admit. as a web designer, im quite inconsiderate to the disabled population. i have avoided flash though for various reasons though... my quote didnt say i used it all the time, just "as much as possible".

my last post was grammatically challenged.
