Treehorn, it is possible to hold to truth as being absolute and at the same time have a "flexible conscience". I don't believe that truth and morality are subjective. Just me.

truth = subjective sometimes
morality = super subjective always

"the truth" meaning fact? or "The Truth" meaning holy enlightenment?

We differ on that point. If you believe that morality is subjective you are forced to believe it to it's logical extreme. Thus, if someone says, "I like to beat people with a bat when I get angry, it helps me relax. And that's ok with my moral code." Then you have to accept that as ok. Why? Because truth & morality are all relative. Absurd. The logical extreme of this thinking is Anarchy.
Morality must have an absolute and unwavering standard for us to measure against.

Treehorn, I believe that there is absolutely one way to a relationship with God. However I have friends, good friends, that don't believe this. I respect them and love them. Do have an "inflexible conscience"?
- J_Treehorn0
Sure, that's one thing. But perpetual torment for those whos beliefs differ from yours is another.

this thread is through the roof

and believing in eternal separation from a holy and loving God for the simple reason of rejecting the one, absolutely free provision he offers as a gift... is another thing.

Frow,
I suppose if you share that supernatural beleif sure. But that is sadly not a fact or shared observation.
- frow0
me not understand your point... but okidoke.

Frow,
My point is this, some of us humans desire freedom from superstition and prefer not to to think of it as anything more than belief. Superstition certainly is not an ethical code to live by.

In response to an earlier remark...
The reality that a significant part of the world population believes that the world will end in thier lifetime is definitely scary to me. It's these applications of dark ages religious hokum that holds us back as a society.

Certainly superstition is not to guide our conduct. I do not equate spiritual beliefs based on a time-tested written word & personal revelation... with superstition.
Regarding apocolyptic views... they stretch far beyond the religious community, my friend. I could apply a similar line of reasoning to folks who embrace an anything-goes lifestyle. Are they not plunging towards a boundary-less society much like ancient Sodom & Gomorrah? Just a thought.
