if you like osx so much, and you're on pc, why not just give freebsd a try? it's really not that far off, kernel wise anyway...

and gnome and kde can be configured to provide gui users a very very very pleasant display.

check out some of the screenshots:
    http://www.gnome.org/start/2.4/s…

linux/unix isn't a 'geek' os anymore...there are plenty of advancements in the gui field of alternate os's.

hey chris, what do you use? have you checked out archlinux at all....it's probably my fav distro...very customizable.

    jesus this is sad

    i prefer oranges.

it's not 2% market share its closer to 7% and the reason they will not port the os over to pc is because apple is a HARDWARE company. it just happens to make some fine software to go with that badass hardware.

apple sells more boxes than any other hardware co. (think gateway, dell, etc). if they liscensed their software it would cut into their hardware sales. thats where they make their loot, on the 2000 dollar boxes not the 150 dollar OS

anyway, all this to say it ain't goin happen and i am glad.

    go buy a g5

    peace

sticks and stones will break my bones but Macs will never be better than PCs >:)

  • toastie0

god, i dont understand why people ignore linux completely.

Blah, blah, blah, yeah, what? linux? oh yeah, no photoshop? whatever. then! blah blah blah..

    "It's quality not quantity."

    Exactly.
I take pride in the fact that my machine isn't sitting in a beige box, and has nickle and dime parts that could potentially self destruct at any moment.

Owning a mac isn't about being dumb, and thus needing some kind of bloatware OS, and an overproced cpu. It's about running an os that is ultra stable, freindly yet powerful, well documented, and can run a cpu that fries a pc.

Rumor tells that Apple actually has made versions of OS 10 complied for every major PC processor available. However, if these were comercially available, Apple (as I see it) would not only be opening themselves to ridicule, but killing their own hardware line.

  • toastie0

but seriously, the reason OSX is so stable is because it is made for specific hardware. Apple knows that video cards, processors, mobos and memory chips are gonna be in the box, so they have all the drivers and they can optimize it 100%. if they do make a PC version, it would have exactly the same problems as linux, as far as compatibility goes.

    I use both....

a PC desktop for games, flash, and the odd testing.....

I work primarily off a powerbook 17 inch, but I am sure it is just preference....both are fine for web design work....print on the mac is a little more reliable, however I have pulled off great jobs on both.

I think the argument is somewhat redundant....

although my girlfriend and I have it almost daily...

    ;-)

    spindle,

I'm basing the 2% off of statistics provided by the major research agencies.

If you want to buy a Mac, you'll be buying from Apple. If you want to buy a PC, you'll be buying from Dell, Sony, Gateway, HP, Acer, IBM, Compaq, Wyse, Neoware, NEC, etc., or they could build it themselves using parts created by hundreds of other brands. Saying Apple sells more boxes than any computer brand is completely irrelevant, if even true.

Windows XP is the most stable operating system I've ever used. And I use Mac OS9 and OSX at work quite often. OS9 crashes constantly on every Mac in our office. OSX crashes occasionally. I bought Windows XP over two years ago. It crashed for the FIRST time about a week ago. Let me repeat that: I'VE USED WINDOWS XP FOR OVER TWO YEARS AND IT HAS CRASHED ONCE. The crash was due to a video driver. I have a 2ghz computer at work and sometimes I can't do Flash animation on it because it's too fast, and my animations that run nice and quick run too slow on slower PCs, and they chug beyond all belief on a Macintosh.

So PCs are only good for Flash and games? Do you remember when Adobe posted an article on their website saying how their software runs much better on PCs? You might not, because the second they did Mac users went ape shit on Adobe. They took the article down to not lose any business.

  • kpl0

Before I go on, let me remind you people I love mac vs pc piss fights. Don't like it? delete the thread or ignore.

"Windows XP is the most stable operating system I've ever used."

WinXP crashes once a month for me, or does inexplicable freezes. at least. More often when I use it more.

"Do you remember when Adobe posted an article on their website saying how their software runs much better on PCs?"

    that was before the G5.

"You might not, because the second they did Mac users went ape shit on Adobe."

this mac user didn't care. Most Mac forums I read had a concensus that it was true but that speed was not the only factor...and that the G5 was coming soon.

"They took the article down to not lose any business."

they took it down because the arrival of the G5.

"I have a 2ghz computer at work and sometimes I can't do Flash animation on it because it's too fast"

oh hey, look, my BS meter just peaked. Have you considering not doing flash at 120 fps?

  • kpl0

"You might not, because the second they did Mac users went ape shit on Adobe. They took the article down to not lose any business."

But alas, the damage was done, and 50% of all mac users are now using Corel Photo-Paint. Because, as we know, there are viable alternatives to PS out there.

(i'm making fun of you for saying stupid things.)

  • Tyrone0

    Again...anal over vaginal anyday.

  • sparker0

first, what linux compatibility issues? most distros work on nearly all pc types, now.

second, what beige boxes? fuck, i haven't owned a beige pc case in 5 years.

i like both. besides, linux runs on either mac powerpc processor architectures or ibm compatible architectures...

doesn't matter to me which box i buy...

and, on a side note, hardware in pc's isn't "nickle and dime" as the ill-informed point out, the majority of it is the exact same quality as mac hardware.

a harddrive is a harddrive, whether is was made for mac or pc..

  • instantok0

    mac vs pc argument aside:

ive seen pc's tricked out to look like osX and i must say it was damn convincing...the look and feel as well as some functionality...there is a little app out there somewhere that gives pc users a doc extremely similar to osX...

it almost made me want a pc....

    but not quite

    :)

  • sparker0

seems to me, really the argument is more windows verses aqua...

pc cases are pretty interesting now, so that negates the physical "style" issue, hardware is hardware, so that point is moot...

os x is (primarily) unix (bsd), so the point about osx being a 'special' os is moot...

the only thing left is people like aqua more than windows....

seems like a pretty shallow reason to pick a workstation to me. especially with skins, themes and such in linux/unix environments and to a degree in windows.

there are plenty of little apps out there that provide similar function across multiple platforms.

but, like i said, i like both...i don't see what the big deal is between them...why does it matter?

  • gavinnosler0

    kpl,

The article was taken down LONG before the G5 was announced. CNet even wrote an article about Adobe's article. By the way, the file name for Adobe's article was pcpreferred.html. I think that says it all right there.

It is a known problem (check Macromedia's forums and Tech Notes) that OS9 can't handle most semi-complex Flash movies. (Meaning animating large vectors or bitmaps. Semi-large shape tweens lag very badly on OS9.) OSX handles it much better due to Apple fixing memory issues OS9 has, but it still can't get it as smooth as a PC does.

Every single person I know who runs XP rarely has a problem. It was a big deal when my computer crashed at work (which was the first time EVER, which I mentioned earlier.) If your computer is crashing all the time, I'm sorry to say it's most likely due to problems created by a user who isn't knowledgeable enough to realize what he/she did wrong.

  • kpl0

So, if there are computer problems, blame the victim?

Oh well. Glad to know your pc and hyperbole is working great for you, gav.

Let me know when you can handle flash tho. (whoa horsie.)

  • gavinnosler0

    sparker,

I think the issue means more to web designers. Our company has decided recently to keep Mac development to a minimum. It's just not worth spending thousands of dollars so the Mac users can have a site function the same and run as quickly as it does for PC users. This decision was made by Mac users. The owner of the company is a Mac user. It's all business, not computer preference.
