He was not allowed to swear an oath, nor to wear a ring nisi pervio et cass, that is, as they explain it, unless plain and without stones; nor to strip himself naked in the open air, nor to go out without his proper head-dress, nor to have a knot in any part of his attire, nor to walk along a path over-canopied by vines. He might not touch flour, nor leaven, nor leavened bread, nor a dead body: he might not enter a bustum [Funus], but was not prevented from attending a funeral. He was forbidden either to touch or to name a dog, a she-goat, ivy, beans, or raw flesh. None but a free man might cut his hair; the clippings of which, together with the parings of his nails, were buried beneath a felix arbor. No one might sleep in his bed, the legs of which were smeared with fine clay; and it was unlawful to place a box containing sacrificial cakes in contact with the bed-stead.

So, I guess I learned to think about the landscape as being a message bearer. It gave me information about forces greater than I am. That I was fortunate to be a participant in these forces, to observe them, to be an activator. I think in a sense my painting is simply about that. I’m an activator and a carrier of these forces that have been going all around me.
I should learn it doesn’t mean that because I’m no longer there, they’re not doing that.

Past the age of fifty, Velasquez
stopped painting definite things.
He hovered around objects
with the air, with twilight,
catching in his shadows
and airy backgrounds...
the palpitations of colour...
which formed the invisible core
of his silent symphony.
Henceforth, he captured only...
those mysterious interpenetrations
of shape and tone that form a constant,
secret progression,
neither betrayed nor interrupted
by any jolt or jar.
Space reigns supreme.
It is as if an aerial wave,
sliding over the surfaces,
soaked up their visible emanations,
defined and modeled them,
then spread them about like a perfume,
an echo of themselves,
a scattering of impalpable dust.

In a groundbreaking new book that does for art what Stephen Pinker’s The Language Instinct did for linguistics, Denis Dutton overturns a century of art theory and criticism and revolutionizes our understanding of the arts.
The Art Instinct combines two fascinating and contentious disciplines—art and evolutionary science—in a provocative new work that will change forever the way we think about the arts, from painting to literature to movies to pottery. Human tastes in the arts, Dutton argues, are evolutionary traits, shaped by Darwinian selection. They are not, as the past century of art criticism and academic theory would have it, just “socially constructed.”
Our love of beauty is inborn, and many aesthetic tastes are shared across remote cultures—just one example is the widespread preference for landscapes with water and distant trees, like the savannas where we evolved. Using forceful logic and hard evidence, Dutton shows that we must premise art criticism on an understanding of evolution, not on abstract “theory.” He restores the place of beauty, pleasure, and skill as artistic values.
Sure to provoke discussion in scientific circles and uproar in the art world, The Art Instinct offers radical new insights into both the nature of art and the workings of the human mind.- Where can I buy?canuck
