lol funny story bout that:
the first christmas i spent with my girlfriends' parents, they ceremoniously presented me with a 'christmas pickle' ornament on christmas eve. they were obviously expecting me to wet myself in holiday glee, but all they got from me was a blank stare. I'd never heard of ze WEIHNACHTSGURKE, must be some weird regional thing that ornament manufacturers obviously picked up on and decided to try to bring it to the masses...- oh, the germans, the germans...********
- yea.. germans....********
- no, these are proper yankees...Greedo

well the reason i asked originally was to get the history of the tradition, but then i wasn't sure if it was actually german, so i looked it up anyway.
that's when i found out it was some crappy commercial gimmick that bears no real connection to german custom
but i figured i'd ask anyway

Does anyone do St. Nicholas Day? My family always did (the German version, at least). It was good to get something to tide me over until the big day.
This is from wiki:
In Germany, Nikolaus is usually celebrated on a small scale. Many children put a boot, called Nikolaus-Stiefel, outside the front door on the night of December 5 to December 6. St. Nicholas fills the boot with gifts, and at the same time checks up on the children to see if they were good. If they were not, they will have a tree branch (rute) in their boots instead. Sometimes, a disguised Nikolaus also visits the children at school or in their homes and asks them if they "have been good" (sometimes ostensibly checking a book for their record), handing out presents on a per-behaviour basis. This has become more lenient in recent decades.- yeah we did this... we'd have st nick and 'black peter' visit our kindergarten, too...Greedo
