@ Horp,
I agree with you on your FFFfound view. That is why I sit here and show work that is without much persuasive style but with a thought .. and I do that until I get something I think (and others think) is worthwhile–then I add style and extra touch ups until it grows into its own thing.
This is my ideal and I'm not saying I haven't been inspired by someone else's idea.
I had a job this past year that was really challenging and at one point in the project I became really nervous about finding the right solution so I turned to FFFFound and I found it made me completely insecure and I felt totally lost. I was no longer following a brief ... I was just grabbing at pearls trying to see what would stick. I felt awful about myself for doing that and haven't returned to the site since. I eventually came up with my own solution and it was received well so there was a happy ending.
I know nothing is 100% unique at this stage in design but if I feel it's a solution I came to on a sketch pad or laying in bed, exhausted, closing my eyes and there it is! then I enjoy my work and have a stronger sense of pride in it.

The reason ffffound is shit, is not because it in itself is shit, but rather that it facilitates the mediocre in the production of more homogenised mediocrity.
I like to draw upon a wide field of influence direct from the source, perhaps an idea would come from a book I had read or from a painting I saw in a gallery or museum. Perhaps I saw a documentary on Seagulls in 1992 and in it there was a funny anecdote about people believing it good luck to be crapped on by a seagull. Perhaps that fits nicely.
What fffound does is offer the completely vacuous and inane a way in to 'ideas' and to 'styles' that do not concern them. Like magpies they like shiny things. They don't know why but they collect these shiny things and like monkeys they mimic what they see, like parrots they repeat what they hear. It's mindless replication for no reason other than "it's cool". Suddenly everyone is a conceptual artist or a graffiti writer, a sculptor and a poet. Suddenly we all have something to say, so lets spell it out in neon and put it in a field of corn.

Is there any simple way of searching FFFFound for particular images by category on their website? E.g. brochures

yeah yeah yeah, give me a break over here

Neuroplasticity, I suspect, is not always a good thing. In fact, I expect that after a certain age it's almost always negative.

so if you come across a typographer, read his biography and discover the fonts he made in 1972 have not been created in a digital form–is it up for grabs? can i go ahead and create it or would i need his permission?
curious because i came across one of these and it looks almost exactly like chevin.
- typist0
no, you dont need his permission, as long as the typeface name is not the same as original(according to the us law), but you don't have his blessing neither, which some tight ass typogrpahers think you are a rip off
- i'm would call myself a revivalist!_salisae_

hmmmm. Let’s see, Warhol liked to collect shiny vacuous things. So did hmmm, Picasso, Dali. Damn, I knew those guys were frauds!
- you may be a little quick to compare work on ffffound with Picasso etc.********
- totally and completely different context for Warhol et all, Picasso disrupted and shaped everything around him, Dali was a fraudkelpie

What the hell is up with all the design talk in the blog thread today?!?! i thought this forum was supposed to be about......oh .......yeah, ummmmm nevermind

picasso took chances and was an experimenter–which takes guts. realizing your standard by observing it on ffffound leaves you to not explore your own mind for visions and ideas. ≤≤ just my opinion, btw

- (oh, i was just being an ass. i just don't think that looking at ffffound and exploring original thought are mutually exclusive.)********
- who said they were mutually exclusive? It seems Rand and yourself can only operate in polar extremes.********
- I just don't see anything inherently wrong with Ffffound, not any more than this place at least. Both are legitimate formats which are mostly misused.********
- (which are mostly misused.)********
- does anybody read anymore?********
- i know ffffound and experimentation are not mutually exclusive but to me it's like trying to count a stack of bills with someone yelling out 27! 14! 99! and i can't keep my track of thought.

You all just took the blog and ruined it with your thoughtful, inspired and obviously well-read intellects... and here I was just happening along in search of mindless dribble, rainbows and unfortunate self-realizations...
... fuck this... i'm going to the Chick of the day thread.
