Great perspective re auto industry and electric: https://vm.tiktok.com/ZMh4YmMLw/…
This has been my feeling for ages re cars, trucks vs. environment. This guy is doing things right with his hybrid trucks he builds... which of course it slaps the face of the current auto industry BUT is actually the right path for consumers and the planet, at this point.
The most environmentally-friendly stance we can take if we’re actually serious about the environment and not blowing smoke up each others’ asses includes:
A) buy used if possible - re-use previous vehicles going back x decades, rebuild, recycle parts over and over and over with creating a minimal need to buy new anything aside from consumable parts to keep these vehicles safe and efficient
B) ban all closed-system approaches with vehicles and make it mandatory for manufacturers to provide access to user data, knowledge and training required to promote a right-to-repair ecosystem to ensure these vehicles can last decades - not unlike cars from the past, they were designed and expected by consumers to last 20+ years and be easily repairable
All I see out there are shoddily-built vehicles that are 2-3X the price they should be, are so entwined in their proprietary digital ecosystems, going green! marketing... it’s a laughing stock. Sad too b/c environment is more toast b/c of it.
- And the delicious irony is many players in the industry are beginning to feel the devastating effects of doing it the wrong way for so long, ie Stellantisprophetone
- My car is 24 years old, still running well, and wife's is 18. I don't plan on buying anything for at least three years, and then it will be used...OBBTKN
- There is a change in strategy, in the US at least, to produce rational and cheap cars, but I am not in a hurry yet.OBBTKN
- US = EUOBBTKN
- And I think the VW group is doing worse than Stellantis right now.OBBTKN
- Yeah I owned a new VW years ago and they run great and everything is great until the moment the warranty period ends...prophetone
- at which point major stuff like headlight system dies, carbon buildup in engine so bad a rebuild required, trans toast... that new car is suddenly upside down $$prophetone
- And this is stuff that intentionally prohibits the right to repair, insane cost of parts, used to be $20 part, now it’s $500
https://vm.tiktok.co…prophetone - Haha wrong link
https://vm.tiktok.co…prophetone - It’s so true. Also this guy is goin fer a rip there, bud.********
- It’s like when architects put some trees on a building and say it’s green! Green is building something that stands for centuries with little maintenance.********
- There was a building with a big tree on top in Vancouver. Tree was dying and it was going to be something like $1M to replace one fucking tree.monNom
- And this post is totally correct. Think of the cost of the vehicle as the equivalent of that much fuel to get a rough sense of the carbon footprint of a new carmonNom
- Then the manufacturers are incentivized to make higher efficiency/short life expectancy vehicles. Are we really winning on emissions?monNom
- There are millions of decent used cars sitting around... imagine the environmental benefits of for next 5 years we pause new car manufacturing...prophetone
- We just work our way through the millions of new or slightly used cars just sitting there, we also freeze msrp so as to avoid a gray market...prophetone
- Make it ten years. We just recycle and re-use what’s already existing and eradicate this culture of I need a new car every 3 years bs for no logical reasonprophetone
- And have a commercial level of course that is strictly monitored that can buy new if critical to avoid shipping supply chain probs, of courseprophetone
- Also we avoid 10 years of massiveness inefficient car battery manufacturing that’s rapidly gobbling up resources in the most planet killing ways possibleprophetone
- And in 10 years we may catch up with battery tech where instead of 7k! cells in a Tesla battery we’ve halved it, then halved it again w/ new techprophetone
- Or straight up avoid mining for nickel/lithium batteries because of cleaner, superior hydrogen fuel cell advancements for cars by thenprophetone

feeling so burned out.. its the same every year, the 10 weeks leading up to December I sign up to tutor sound design at Uni, which is usually just 1 extra day of work.. but its 3 classes back to back no break, and then we usually have at least 3 assignments throughout to mark.. now given i work the other 4 days a week, and both of my kids have their birthday during this period also, my days usually look like 8 hours at day job followed by 2-3 most nights just to keep on top of marking.. Then if im lucky I get in front of it enough to maybe have a sunday off.
but the you get a run of 2 busy weekends in a row and before you know its 18 days without a day off for anything, laundry, sleep, music, drinking.. just carnage.
fortunately next week is the last week.. and I get that weekend off before they submit their final assignment and I start on the marking grind again.
for real feels like i age 3 times as faster during this period.

What would it take for the UK Monarchy to fuck off?
Protests? Signed petitions? Electing a political party who promise to do it with a referendum?

I'd like to see a "Like" & "Dislike" button on Chrome. When you come across a dogshit webpage that has wasted your time or a page you have found useful or well written you can give it a quick rating. I'm sure Google would love that information too. I bet there is an extension that does it but would be nice to have it built in.

I saw The Wild Robot yesterday with my kids. Anything with robots showing emotion just guts me. It's a beautiful movie but man the people that make those movies truly have a solid formula for crafting emotional hooks on a level few live-action movies with humans ever could.

What a scare! An hour ago (9 pm) I received a message from a client, regarding a project that I had to solve in a hurry...
The first thing I thought was that something had happened, and that everything had gone to hell, and I would have to solve it during the weekend.
But no, in reality he wrote to me thanking me for the speed and quality of the final result.
I love receiving this type of praise, but please; I'm too old for these types of scares ;)

Two nights ago, this time, the geese passed through, on their annual migration, heading south, entering through the Pyrenees...
And it shows, today I had to turn on the heating in the studio, with my hands frozen and wearing a vest, just in case.
The group of stray cats that I feed every day, look out from the garden window, they are cold and want to come inside. There are 5 of them, too many to feed all winter.
Look how my head works (also my wife's, apparently) I only think about the weekend to light the fireplace, prepare comforting recipes, read and rest, winter is coming, and with it, the time to take things more calmly.

I grew up having two cats.
Never seen the appeal of having a drooling dog.
One of the things that pisses me off the most is dog piss streaming across the pavement. With only a dog sh*t on the pavement trumping that. The wife and two young kids (5&7) all want to get a dog.
I know I'll be the one left to walk it in the Scottish wind and rain, have to clean out the car etc.Am I being too pessimistic?
Tell me the good things about having a dog.

I'd posted earlier about my dying windows laptop and looking for something new asap.
Someone had mentioned going for Apple instead of Windows. So had me checking out the new M4 MBPs.
An appealing thing about apple is their value down the line. If I buy a beast and use if for 3,4,5 years, I can still get a decent return if I was to sell it. Same can't be said for anything Windows.Found out that someone I know can get me a decent discount on any new Apple so def going M4.
I'd be using it for:
Digital Art - Photoshop with lots of layers, large filesizes.
Video - Putting together audio visual artworks, large filesizes potentially but videos would only be 5 mins max. No half hour episodes.
Music - Occasionally use Ableton Live for music production. Not really into gaming, and no 3D work either.

Got laid off yesterday for the first time in my life, from a 13-year run at one of the world's largest tech companies. This happened while I was on medical leave for stress and anxiety (totally legal, just shit). I also found out yesterday that my divorce was finalized, so it was a pretty eventful day.
People keep telling me that they're "so, so sorry", etc., but honestly so much fucking awful shit has happened to me in the past few years that I think I'm just desensitized to it all.
The silver lining is I fucking hated that job and now I don't have to deal with their bullshit corporate politics anymore. That and the fact I honestly have pretty much fuck all to show for those 13 years.
I'll miss the money (so much money it was ridiculous). I'm also terrified and exhausted thinking about how I need to conjur up a portfolio out of nowhere and get back to interviewing. I'll be 50 next year, and I honestly just want to sit around and scratch my arse all day for the rest of my life.
No idea where I'm going with this. I recently just ticked over from being able to take all my daily pills in one go, to needing to split them in two, which weirdly is bothering me more than it should, especially given how everything else has been crumbling around me.
Wah fucking wah, whatever. Gen X represent.
