yep, those are the tools i'm talking about.
the perception of opportunity is a huge difference in where people set their goals in life. parents, family, friends, teachers, etc.., all have an impact on how far you think you can go.
lost, i'm not really talking about working hard vs not working hard.. hard work is only 1 tool that people need to succeed, but the perception of opportunity is most important
and yep, i'm dropping this particular conversation with my roommate.. went nowhere

These rags to riches stories are few and far between. For every person who claims to have pulled themselves up from nothing, there are thousands who haven't. I still fail to believe that these people enjoy being poor or should be kept there because they haven't found a way out.
In a perfect world, there wouldn't be a need for welfare. But what incentive is there to get off of it when minimum-wage jobs don't even allow someone to raise above the poverty line?

this discussion is ass. Do me a favor and someone learn rhetoric without resorting to strawmen please?
- Mimio0
I wouldn't want to rely on conservatives to educate the taxpaying public. The one thing that all liberals understand is that life isn't all dollars and cents. Conservatives never seem to get that.
- lowimpakt0
THEIR dollars and THEIR cents.......
- mrdobolina0
correct mimio, government shouldn't be for-profit.
- Mimio0
Exactly MrDob. We taxpayers can bankroll Bush's 1 trillion+ war for "OUR OWN PROTECTION" from terrorists, But we can't protect our own nation from middle class erosion and underfunded public schools.

You know what this has really nothing to do with liberals or conservatives.
The problem is the cost of living. No matter what side of the political party your on this will not be changed.
Yes we would all love to see a perfect world. But unfortunately their is one factor that keeps this from happening. HUMANS
So the best we can do is just help our fellow neighbor. Encourage the youth to strive and do their best.
Possibly pay teachers more and have more restrictions on who teaches our children.
There are so many more positive ways we can fix this instead of lowering taxes or having welfare programs that dish out money for nothing.
I hand it to any hardworking person rich or poor.
Im sorry they are poor. But thats why we must always help each other instead of blaming our government.

Unfortunately parents play a big role in this sick society.
You also have a media saturated society that lies to the public all the time.
This is the examples we teach our children?
SAD

" Yes we would all love to see a perfect world. But unfortunately their is one factor that keeps this from happening. HUMANS"
wrong. I think you mean approaches to and implications of specific public policies.

it's strange that capitalism is equated is equated with democracy. Free market capitalism is by nature, not democratic. In a free capitalist system the market is decided by investment and return, cost and profit, etc. not a particulary freindly system, but for the market that's all well and good, for a while. Everyone knows that the more money you have, the more money you can make, so what happens when you just keep makeing money, and eventually, you and a few freinds end up with all the money. Now the undemocratic part, government represents the people right? well the people need jobs, and the people products, and houses, and all kidns of things, and the people with all the money own all these things. What does this mean? it means the government is dependent on these corporate few to keep the country from collapseing, now the government no longer represents the people, it represents the currency. ie, your vote is only as big as your bank account. That's not a country ruled by the people, but that's what we live in. As it is now, less than 1% of the population controls 99% of the wealth.
Also, why does the word liberalism make everyone think of welfare, fuck welfare, the governments are corrupt.

Hear Tom Jobim and your soul can be saved.

I have to say being a Republican is not easy when all you liberals know that our agenda is empirical and fascist and that we use Christianity to justify our greed, racism, classism, etc.
Being evil is a lot of fun though. Millions of people suffer while I have boat drinks in Ibiza.
It's great.

Come on ....guys...lets not start blocking the poll stations with barriers so as not to let the black community vote.

the rags to riches fallacy?
duh.
look at the annual "economic report of the president", the un statistical database, whatever you want to look at. Upward mobility in the US is certainly better than in almost every other part of the world, but it's still really low (most people die in the economic quintile they were born into).
Why do we have better upward mobility here?
because we have slightly better access to resources. why? because "liberals" faught tooth and nail for them.eight-hour day? - liberals died for that one.
public eduction? - liberals died for that one.
voting rights the other two thirds of the population? -
etc. etc.
the only reason any of us have the opportunities we have is because liberals fought and died for them.
transport yourself back to 1860: conservative or liberal?
conservatives are slave drivers. always have been. always will be.
just keep lookin' out for number-one boys!
history is on our side.

Amen, Dave.
Well put.

I don't know about you, but when was the last time you had an 8 hour work day? My "normal" day is 9 hours, but usually it turns into 10,11,12,+.
As for public schools, I think the voucher system is doing away with that...
- mrdobolina0
I work 8 hour days everyday, but then I do freelance at night, so umm never?
