"For most high-functioning individuals in modern society there is a balance between trust and paranoia, based upon a rationale appraisal of the situation based upon experience and understanding (Green and Phillips, 2004; Nelson et al., 2012). It has been proposed that religion and schizophrenia have similar evolutionary underpinnings (Dein and Littlewood, 2011). In this view, both theory of mind and attributing life events to an external agency are hyperextended and intrude thought processes and actions excessively. One way to view the brains of those who believe in a God, particularly fundamentalists, is that they have a low level of trust in people and so fabricate an external agency, a security blanket in which they trust."
- makes sensemonospaced
- Indeed. It sounds like belief in god(s) is a rational protection mechanism, no?Morning_star
- < I don't agree at all. This may have some contemporary relevance but trying to connect religion + schizo from an evolutionary perspective is a massive reachGnash
- Rational? I think it could be argued either way with ease. Some might say that not resorting to a fabricated supernatural is far more rational :)monospaced

- Gnash Schizophrenia is a genetic disorder and one of the top symptoms are extreme adoration for a religion or with the occult.sted
- I prefer the theory that theism arose from the evolutionary advantages of seeing intention in things. If we can't tell what an animal may do, we could die.i_monk
- So we model the intention of other things, just in case there's a threat. But like seeing faces in clouds, it's easy to see intention in the world at large.i_monk
- So there must be intent behind that lightning, that flood, that tree... So, gods.i_monk

@_niko (regarding your post below) Your assumption is that the absence of religion would allow humans to live in peace, love and harmony. You are wrong.
The absence of religion would arguably lead to more death, war and injustice. The abhorrent actions of those driven by a misguided interpretation of their faith is less to do with the Koran and more to do with radicalisation and social intolerance.
What divides us as humans is everything: sport, money, politics, drugs, sex, shopping, resources, music, emotions, love, death ...and on, and on ad infinitum. We are a fundamentally 'tribal' species and this will always lead to conflict. Always. Laying the blame for all the troubles of humanity at the feet of religion is myopic.
During the French revolution 17,000 people were decapitated in the streets in front of an audience and it wasn't because of a religion.
- Jordy P gets into that a lot, how humans are too daft to function without a god myth. It helps drive the society and give people hope.PhanLo
- The very idea that religions somehow have a monopoly on morality is absurd. Religions are not required for a moral society.monospaced
- @mono No one is claiming thatMorning_star
- I agree Morningstar, if you take away religion from the animals, they are still animals. What we need is education, logic and an awakening._niko
- What we need is a planet full of evolved, moral, ethical human beings who can reason and see that we are all in this together for the good of mankind_niko
- I’m with you all the way.Morning_star
- This means ridding is of religion, ridding is of imaginary borders, ridding us of tribalism, ridding is of hate and suspicion of the other. It’s the only way fd_niko
- If you say absence of religion would cause more death and pain, then you’re implying it is keeping those things at bay. I flat out disagree.monospaced
- great post +1fadein11
- I don't think people need religion, if you look at some European countries that have the lowest levels of religion they are perfectly fine and great places toyuekit
- live. Of course there are other fanatical belief systems people can get sucked into, but that doesn't prove religion is necessary.yuekit
- Having said that I'm not anti-Islam or anti-Buddhist or Christian, these are closely tied to peoples' culture and history. And I think they can be evolved toyuekit
- fit in with a modern humanist science based society, they have all evolved throughout history even if the more hardline religious types don't like to admit it.yuekit

Religion is Philosophy ??? Tell us more about that !gonzalle - religion has battled science since it's creation. so science vs religion fitshotroddy

- ... to answer.Morning_star
- @hotroddy. It's true, Religious MEN have battled scientific MEN always. But that isn't what that < is claiming. It's comparing a process with a philosophy. It..Morning_star
- ...would be equally 'right' to say Religion flies you to the moon and Science flies you into buildings.Morning_star
- Religion is not philosophy. Do we need to start a what's not philosophy thread?isleptwithsirenstonight
- There are enough similarities that religions can be philosophical (but need not be) and philosophies can be religious (but again need not be). It was just a...Morning_star
- ...convenient (probably lazy ;) ) alternative word for Religion. My point still remains true. That< is a stupid comparison.Morning_star
