was thinking while watching GOT that the rise of Christianity probably had a lot to do as a counterbalance to the rampant moral corruption of the ruling classes, it gave a little power to commoners, that they could live their lives a certain way and only answer to a higher authority.
Then the church became the ruling class and it all went to shit once more.

A new Gallup poll shows that 73% of Americans subscribe to creationism in one form or another, including 42% who take a literal interpretation of Genesis.
- it's still under 50% based on this article, not sure where you got 73%monospaced
- By combining the two god-involved answers.i_monk
- love the direct correlation they make between education and belief in creationismhereswhatidid
- which two percentages did you add?monospaced
- Because no matter how I read this, it's never over 50%monospaced
- combine those that believe in direct creation and those with guided evolutionhereswhatidid
- so creationists and intelligent design folkshereswhatidid
- They don't provide those as simple %s though. They're broken down by another variable.monospaced
- Top graph. 2014. 42% + 31% = 73%.i_monk
- one could note the god-related beliefs have decreased while the secular beliefs have more than doubled but that wouldn't be very anti-americanscarabin

You can prove the tooth fairy doesn't exist by recording the 'myth' in action. It's very easy to unravel the mystery with a couple of strategically placed video cameras and a set of parents willing to upset a young child ;)
The case is not the same for beliefs, any of them. By definition 'faith' has no proof. Your claim that there are no gods, is still a claim, and one that requires substantiation, otherwise it is faith.
Atheists are not claiming that they just don't know. They are claiming that they KNOW that there are no gods. To understand that something doesn't exist you have to know the nature of what that something is. Do you KNOW what god is?- sorry, but the burden of proof is on those who are making the ridiculous claimsmonospaced
- additionally, nobody who is making religious claims can "record the myths in action' convenientlymonospaced
- That's because it's faith. And you are making a claim, so prove it .Morning_star
- It's a long standing principle that the person making the claim is the one who has to provide the proofukit2

- Atheism is more of a minimalist viewpoint. It's not claiming to have all the answers, just that there is no good evidence for what religious people believe.ukit2

It's not so much that people find the need to believe in god that bothers me, it's what they do with him.
The god people seem to believe in always seems to support their beliefs 100%. How come a certain group's god ever disagrees with them.
Hey, I hate gays! Well, god seems to hate them too! Well alright!
Hey, I have to kill those people over there! Hey, my god says that's a good thing! Well alright.
It seems the people that stand up and say "Hey, wait...I think god doesn't want you to do that." tend to not be very popular. Or you know, get nailed to crosses.
Just sayin'
