I live in Philly, I love it. If you have a bike you can get around the city very well. If you have a car, you have to learn the spots where you won't get the tickets. Parking there is insane.
First Friday can be annoying as everyone converges on Olde City which makes it a mess if you live there.
West Philly isn't as bad as people have said. I have some friends that live out in W.Philly and it feels more like a neighborhood out there.
Avoid living in Center City, that's where most of the people I know have been mugged.
that's my 10ยข

I walk home from the studio at 2 or 3 AM almost every night and I'm always surpised how many "normal" looking people are walking around. But that's on broad st. which is well lit. I only know one person who was mugged.

Killputer writes "If your afraid of "variety" and think things like "Don't go West you'll get shot by black people.." (I live in West Philly now and I am white and have never been shot by any race or creed) if you are not "city folk" then live in the burbs."
You obviously don't get around the city very often. I lived in the city for 8 years (Old City, Art Museum, and Rittenhouse). I currently live out in the burbs. Now, I don't want to sound racist, because I have family and a ton of friends who are black and they all agree with me on this. I'm not exactly white either. A lot of the African Amercian population in Philly have some serious probs. When I lived in the Art Museum area, I got jumped by six 20 year old african americans, for what? Nothing..they all just thought it would be fun. I heard gun shots about every other day. A drug dealer got shot in the head on my corner. The lady who lived upstairs from me, got cut up, put in bags, and the bags were hung over the Schuykill. What do you see on the news in Philly everyday? Black people killing other black poeple, killing white people, voilence. My ex GF got mugged for her jacket. All by African Americans that LIVE in the city. My ex GF's mom is a cop at 21st and Callowhill, she says that even black cops don't like the black people that live there. When you go to McDonalds or Wawa, do u EVER get greeted? In the burbs you do. I'm not saying that all black people are bad in Philly but if you go out in the burbs you don't see this shit often. I grew up around black people. In fact, my high school was 75% black. Living in an area where all that kind of shit happens, gives you a different perspective on black people, even if you are not a racist. Does being poor mean you have to be ghetto and violent? The people are much more friendlier in the burbs, there's less violence, among other things. So...I guess being 'city-folk' means that you can deal with all of that shit? Is that a positive or negative thing?

Poor white people would be shooting each other too, if they lived in the city. And when they do live in the city, they do shoot each other, just as it happens in other poor neighborhoods.

And BTW, I have a good friend who goes to school in Philly. He loves it. just like any other big city, make sure you know somebody in the hood you're going to, or bad things could happen.

Well Philadelphia is about 50/50 black and white. Not many cities are like that.
A poor person is more likely to mug and stab you than a rich person. Many of the poor in Philly are black. Do the math.
The difference between the average white philadelphian and the average black philadelphian is not skin color but poverty.
Walk around the neighborhoods in Center City and University City and you see white art students with iPods. Walk around the neighborhoods outside Temple and it's different story.

Tons of poor white ppl DO live in the city. Actually, white people don't kill each other in Philly. They kill themselves. They OD on drugs. drugs. Think Fishtown. Think NorthEast Philly.

what ever happened to brotherly love?

I think it's some other arbitrarily false taglilne now like "Philadelphia: The City that Loves You Back"

It's easy to stay safe in the city- just make sure you are within 100 yards of a starbucks...

skelly, you have a point. BUT, being poor is not an excuse to be violent, or unmannered. That's a way of life that people CHOOSE, and in Philly, for some reason, its more prominent with black ppl. People don't choose to be poor, that's just how shit works out. Money has nothing to do with it. There's plenty of homeless ppl out there that don't act like that.

(Oct 18 05, 14:05)While that is without a doubt true... and there is lots of black on black shootings- philly has alot of nieghborhoods and I am quite possibly the whitest guy you'll ever meet and I got along fine for 10 years here.
I am not dissing the burbs- I just feel as unsafe as you do. I live in a irsh/ italian nieghborhood where the white kids are scary then the ghetto just four blocks away.

their is no brotherly love in the city... you gotta love that

I've just moved out here, living in Northern Liberties, and I've had a great time.. for some reason I keep being invited to all these house parties (of people I obviously don't know) and every one is ok.
Although My car got a brick through it by north star bar but I really don't leave my area much, unless to buy groceries or anything, and I feel safe around here... if that helps.. ARTs and people are a plus to me.

there are many neighborhoods within the city limits that offer natural beauty, diversity and beautiful architecture without the dominant mind numbing culture of the main line
