Would this work?

I want to write a book about how to do some web development stuff and I am thinking this:
I would publish sections to a site as I write them. The first few will be free, then after that the site is pay access to get the updates.
Starts out at small price, then as time goes, increases as the amount of sections increase...then at the end publish the whole thing as a book.
Readers could comment on the drafts of the sections and stuff.
I don't know if a monthly fee or a one-time fee would be good?
Any ideas? Does this suck?

how much would the total book be? I don't think you can charge a monthly fee more then the total cost of the book.
My thoughts: unless the book is one of a kind then the info is out on the web. It might just take a little longer to find. I've got a few books for reference, but I mostly consult google. So I would not pay. but that's me.
Use the site to give some info, enough to give users a feel for the info. but don't give all the info. Use it to sell books.

how would it be different than lynda.com? or whatever popular web development tutorial site there is already.

I think most people would be reluctant to pay for an incomplete body of work ... I would

i don't think many folks attentions spans would last that long... waiting on your next installment (so-to-speak)...

Also, why would the price keep increasing. I would expect to pay a flat rate after the free period expired.
This all depends on what you have to offer.

most companies of this sort start off free and offer everything up for a number of years then benefit financially from renting advertising space .. that goes on for a few years then they begin charging a low monthly fee

this is a model a lot of people are already using.

i agree that there are similar things that exist...
the idea for this is that an author can make a little money while wirting the book...
the fee would be a one time fee, pay 5$, get all the updates. after it's more complete, pay 10$, get all the updates. when it's done, maybe pay 20$ and get the paper book.
so the idea is that some people will take a chance and buy it while it's cheap and the author doesn't have to wait till they are done to make an money...
yeah, its weird...but would it work?
(not just for technical books, any kind of book)
