blueOne: I question whether those people are truly regerate Christians. Since they are acting in a thoroughly un-Christlike manner. The Bible speaks clearly about those who profess the name of Christ, but who do not have a saving relationship with him. (Matthew Ch. 7)
Fundamentalism, essentially means to get back to the core truths or fundamentals of something. Depending on those core fundamentals, fundamentalism can be a very good or very bad thing.

I agree with you totally, and wouldn't call them christians either in my understanding. Unfortunately, those who do hold such beliefs do at the moment carry a lot of political weight, and thus become one powerful "face" for christianity in modern america. Sadly so.I've read you enough over the months to know that while you're a literalist in regards to the whole genesis creation stuff, which I disagree with, you're ethical view based on Christ's teachings are pretty solid. You don't really come across as a fundamentalist - it;'s those types of christians that really get under my skin, and probably under the skin of most of those who tend to argue with you in these threads.
Since I consider all the science/scripture stuff as a sideline to the actual value of jesus' teaching I could really care less about arguing about it except as a intellectual excercise.

flagellum thinks slavery is o.k. beacuse they can be treated "just like family members".
we know he's (she?) is a absolutist christian supremacist.
why bother?

Harris also talks about how religion actually ushers in suffering. His example was catholic missionaries in africa urging the africans to not use condoms. Even though the spread of HIV would be slowed down if the people did.

"" Top of the class, in both atheism and good behavior, come the Japanese. Over eighty percent accept evolution and fewer than ten percent are certain that God exists. Despite its size – over a hundred million people – Japan is one of the least crime-prone countries in the world. It also has the lowest rates of teenage pregnancy of any developed nation.
(Teenage pregnancy has less tragic consequences than violence but it is usually unwanted, and it is frequently associated with deprivation among both mothers and children. In general, it is a Bad Thing.)
Next in line are the Norwegians, British, Germans and Dutch. At least sixty percent accept evolution as a fact and fewer than one in three are convinced that there is a deity. There is little teenage pregnancy , although the Brits, with over 40 pregnancies per 1,000 girls a year, do twice as badly as the others. Homicide rates are also low -- around 1-2 victims per 100,000 people a year.
At the other end of the scale comes America. Over 50 percent of Americans believe in God, and only 40 percent accept some form of evolution (many believe it had a helping hand from the Deity). The U.S. has the highest rate of teenage pregnancy and homicide rates are at least five times greater than in Europe and ten times higher than in Japan. ""
religion is evil.
fact.

Out of print at the moment but worth it to buy used. Again might throw some more interesting questions your way.

No problems with you gramme, or anyone else for that matter, haha.
"So whenever I do something good that goes against my selfish nature, it's because of a divine gift, notbecause of any merit I possess. Does that make sense?"
Not to me no, but I guess that's the whole differing view points.
When I do things that are good, I do them because they are right not because I'm possessed by some divine gift.
Perhaps my feeling of right, constitues your definition of divine gift though.
I'd call that just being nice and/or raised well by my mother, haha.

pavlov,
it's important i feel because when you are respectful you can carve away at the issue until the truth lies there...
prove that a ghost exists, it never has been done. That is supernatural, no?

Me and the Pope are both against the use of condoms, albeit for different reasons.

pavlov has mastered the google search. But has neglected to factor in that he/she can find support for virtually any silly position, out there on the internets.

Did you not state that old testament endorsemsnt slavery was o.k. because "salves were treated just like family members"?

pavlov's_troll: two can play at the google search game:

http://www.stnews.org/Commentary…
"Commitment to religious communities reduces the risk of alcohol and drug abuse, premature sexualbehavior, depression, suicide, and anti-social behavior, as well as enhancing positive coping strategies among teens (Weaver et al., 2000). In a society with epidemic levels of social problems that put adolescents at risk for psychological problems, premature death, and disability, this is no small finding."

never endorsed slavery. Who's dishonest?
