Does anyone know if it's possible to copy tracks within iTunes? I've been ripping a lot of my music and I'd prefer not to waste hard drive space by having multiple copies of a song from the single and LP.
I can click copy in iTunes, but there's no where to paste?
Thanks.

Create a playlist and drag and drop the songs onto the playlist.
iTunes creates a link to the original, like an alias, without doubling the size.

(Oct 5 06, 19:43)Yeah, thanks. I've done that, but if I edit the file information for one song, it edits both. It's hard to organize the songs properly when they have to share data.

That's true. I don't have a solution to the problem, I guess. Sorry!

the song info is written into the mp3's ID3 tag.. you can't have multiple sets of info for 1 mp3 file.
the same song ripped from an EP and a LP is always going to be 2 files.

btw.. the copy cmnd in itunes just copies the song info as text.
if you want to duplicate an mp3, or *really* manage your music, turn off the itunes prefs to organize your library and work with the files on your drive.

(Oct 5 06, 20:34)That's what I do, I have an external FW drive where all my songs are, I can only play those songs if my computer is connected to that drive (of course) but it will copy all the songs, (from external drive and computer drive ) on my to my ipod.
But I guess this is not what are you looking for...
Why do you want to have the same audio track w/ different ID3 tag information on it? That seems a bit confusing to me, if you explain, maybe we can all figure out what are you trying to do...

(Oct 5 06, 20:56)Like I said, I've ripped a a bunch of singles and I don't want to have duplicate files, but...
If I just drag the song to a different playlist, the tag information cannot be changed, so as a simple example:
I already have Pavement's CR, CR in iTunes. I've ripped the Gold Soundz single, but I don't want to have two copies of that track on my hard drive (one for CR, CR and one for Gold Soundz). If I drag the track from the LP, the playlist for the single will be sloppy/out of order because the track will display the LP information.
I know a given album may only have a few singles, but when you multiple that by your entire library, it becomes quite relevant.
I didn't think this was something that rare, but I guess I'm in the minority. :)

but like i was saying.. the track info is written into the original mp3 file, and nothing to do with itunes.
in other words, the mp3 file can only hold ID info for 1 album. doesn't matter what player your using.

(Oct 6 06, 08:29)Yeah, thanks. It just seems like you should be a able to create a copy, or shortcut, if you will, within iTunes.
Oh well. Thanks again.

I still don't understand, sorry..
You have track number 5 of MR X as a single, and also on MR X album wich contains Track 1, 2, 3 , 4 and 5.
You only want track number 5 once. if this is the case, why are you copyying it twice?I also don't think this is an itunes related problem.
If you have one track X and you have it in 4 different playlists, they will all link to a single file.
If you have duplicates of your track X file, then erase the extra mp3s and you should be fine.
Unless you have lets say a Main Mix (usually longer for djs to mix in and out) a radio edit (shorter version, almost no intro or outro) and other versions of the same track..
did that help?

Because I want to have a playlist for the album and the single.
As horton pointed out, the information is stored in the mp3 file, so if I drag the song in iTunes to another playlist, it's just a duplicate of the original. I can't change any of the file information without it affecting all of the copies.
So in your example, if I copy the fifth track from the album to the single's playlist, it retains all of the album information - it will have a different album name (and possibly year) than the b-sides. In other words, it won't be organized correctly.
- horton0
i understand.. but its not possible, no matter what player you use.
here's your solution if you want to be a thorough digital music collector with complete artist libraries readily online;
get a dedicated music drive.. like 250GB+

za-zing!
the ladies tell it like it is.

Yeah, thanks horton. I'm going to have to get a new machine soon anyway, so I'll probably get a couple of externals for my work and music things. Right now I have a single drive dedicated for both, but as you can imagine, it fills up pretty quickly.
