Vanity fair - "Most troubling of all, perhaps, was a sentiment the expert said a member of Kushner’s team expressed: that because the virus had hit blue states hardest, a national plan was unnecessary and would not make sense politically. “The political folks believed that because it was going to be relegated to Democratic states, that they could blame those governors, and that would be an effective political strategy,” said the expert."

TBH when the feds went in to portland i was kind of wondering what the set up was - it was obviously a test in something
given the corona spike + the fact employment benefits just ended + the federal moratorium on evictions just ended = we could be seeing a mass of very nervous people suddenly take to the streets, and a recently prepared/terrified america to see a federal response in major cities
especially given the states will respond to help their people and this could get drawn out over a couple months, and people may have enough for one more rent payment, it actually could all come to a hilt right around the election.

Those attempting to wall off “politics” from Cain’s death aren’t doing it to protect Cain. They’re doing it to protect Trump. Trump’s failure to organize America’s response to the virus has led to more than 150,000 deaths. Trump’s megalomania led him to hold an indoor rally in Oklahoma at a time when coronavirus cases were surging. Trump’s decision to turn basic precautions, like the wearing of face masks, into culture-war issues have only made the problem more difficult to resolve. It’s worth noting that Trump politicized Cain’s death as well. Asked about Cain on Thursday, he didn’t offer a eulogy. “Unfortunately,” Trump said, “he passed away from a thing called the China virus.”

The most disturbing problem about populism is that it places the political interests above the professional ones in every case.
The best example of this is in history books will be how the Trump administration handles the Covid-19 crisis on a social and political level.

"By repeatedly stopping short of the left’s most ambitious—and most politically incendiary—proposals, Biden has created an agenda that is less progressive than Sanders’s or Warren’s would have been. [...] But as Waleed Shahid, the communications director for Justice Democrats, told Vox’s Matthew Yglesias, Biden is still running on “the most progressive platform of any Democratic nominee in the modern history of the party.”

As i'm a filthy colonialist English Limey and ignorant of the actual realities of the US political system, elections and leadership shenanigans, i have a few question.
How distanced are most US citizens from the direct impact of a decision a president would make?
Which has more impact on a US citizen, State or Federal policies and legislation?
How much, if at all, is the president an impotent figurehead?
Is it really that much of an issue that the next president will be a septuagenarian with diminished mental faculties?
Without violence and civil disobedience, is it possible to add a more suitable candidate into the mix for the upcoming election? Thanks.

Re: Morninstar
We basically only have two parties. Democrats, which would be considered conservatives in most developed countries, and the GOP, which are literally treading into fascist waters. That's not an exaggeration.
The president is selected by the electoral college, which is an antiquated system that was developed to help slave-owners have more sway in the political apparatus on account of them living in less populated states. Not that Clinton was a viable candidate by any stretch, but she did win the popular vote and still lost the election.
What else do you want to know? Rampant gerrymandering, foreign influence, corporate influence, etc. If you're looking for names, Mitch McConnell is probably the most dangerous member of the GOP.
However I did just read about the most hilarious political party on your end of the pond: J4BM, or "Justice for Men and Boys
(and the Women Who Love Them)".Sadly, we'll probably have something that pathetic in the near future.

How QAnon Creates a Dangerous Alternate Reality
-
In 2019, the F.B.I. cited QAnon as one of the dangerous conspiracy theories posing domestic terrorist threats to the United States and cited past incitements of violence from its adherents. Despite its fringe origins, the conspiracy movement continues to grow in troubling ways.
