I have a Republican friend who looks to me for objective advice and perspective. I have to explain things in a very basic way, but he listens.

But it's challenging to deal with "well let's wait to see what happens" people, and people who have just not ever objectively focused on the rogue's gallery of people who have sucked up to Trump, enabled him, worshipped him, etc.

This Matt Gaetz pick for AG... holy hell what unethical insanity. He's one of several being chosen for speaking out about the "weaponization of the DOJ" because they want to put an end to it.

No, they want to ensure the DOJ, and laws, and rules, aren't used against THEM, because they're the ones who abuse it the most. The ones who are hindered the most by it, the ones who don't want to suffer any legal consequences for doing objectively bad or illegal things.

That's the thing that's so hard to explain to politically apathetic people. I just gave an example to my daughter on the way home from school that she understood so clearly, at NINE; most of the Republicans I know are grown adults who cannot understand that all this grievance against the weaponization of government is entirely subjective, because they're team is sick of getting in trouble for doing things THEY SHOULD GET IN TROUBLE FOR.

    • Thankfully, it looks like the Senate is high unlikely to confirm him.Continuity

You know who isn’t terrified about the next four years?

The DNC and democrat politicians. Even those who lost their seat.

Sure, they’re frustrated and would have rather won. But for the most part, they’ll just ride it out and run again in a few years. Politicians at that level are generally financially secure and always very well connected. They’ll be fine.

Someone like Bernie is the exception, maybe. But even he’s just pissed off more than he is scared. Politicians win and lose and they’re fine with it. It comes with the territory for them. They’d rather win, of course! But they aren’t shaking in their boots about Trump, no matter what they say in public.

    • I expect the Dems will clean up in the midterms, after people have had a couple of years of fully witnessing just how fucking stupid they were in 2024.Continuity
    • After outspending their opponents 4:1 and going on to lose the house the senate and the presidency, you think they’re going to be just fine?monNom
    • I think they’re going to really struggle at fund raising next time out. Their ‘machine’ doesn’t work anymore. Probably time for some new faces.monNom
    • AOC just dropped the pronouns from her X profile bio :))grafician
    • "outspending their opponents 4:1"
I don't think that's true...from what I saw both the Trump and Harris campaigns raised around a billion dollars.
      yuekit
    • I saw 300ish Trump and 1.1B Harris but those numbers are a bit off. Actual spending was $345M Trump. $916M Harris. So ~1:3monNom
    • https://www.opensecr…yuekit
    • ^ When you count the total spending it's more like $1.1 billion Trump $1.65 billion Harris.yuekit
    • So she raised more but 3 or 4 times isn't realistic...I don't think there's ever been a campaign where that happened.yuekit
  • yuekit1

It's one thing to appoint a bunch of far-right politicians but many of these choices just seem stupid. Matt Gaetz has no idea how to run the Justice Department...the new Defense Secretary is a Fox News host...Tulsi Gabbard a laughable choice to be intelligence director.

These people will probably spend most of their time stuck in controversies that are a result of their own incompetence rather than making whatever reforms Trump voters are imagining.

However one of the trademarks of Trump's political career is that his followers have shown again and again they can't tell the difference.

    • why is T.Gabbard a laughable choice?uan
    • I don't see how anyone who was barely ever a practicing lawyer, and absolutely never a prosecutor, should run the DOJmg33
    • Hilarious; America will officially be a kakistocracy.moogchild
    • Tulsi was a member of Congress and served in the Army Reserve...no intelligence experience at all. Typically you'd pick someone with a lot of knowledgeyuekit
    • for such a serious job. She's popular on social media because she talks vaguely about ending overseas wars but there's zero substance there.yuekit
    • Hegseth (Defense Nom) has been married 3 times. The first 2 ended after he got (what would become) his next wife pregnant.jbasnight
    • obviously I don't know her...but being a soldier with combat experience serving in a medical unit, I bet she saw a lot of damage caused by the intelligence.uan
    • Gaetz was being investigated for drug use and sex trafficking underage girls. There are clips where you can see him doing what appears to be a bump of coke inyuekit
    • Congress. But hey...this is what people voted for lol.yuekit
    • I got the impression a lot of ppl voted against something this time. now they hope for a Susan Boyle moment.uan
  • yuekit0

lol @ RFK Jr. as Health Secretary. I know we're not supposed to say stuff like this but you just can't emphasize enough how dumb Trump and his followers are. We really are living in Idiocracy.

  • mg330

All these picks, and how does MAGA react?

"The democrats are really mad about [insert name of pick] so that means they're exactly the right pick!"

That's their criteria. Experience, skill, education, ethics, etc. don't matter one bit. All that matters is that Democrats are pissed about the person chosen.

    • But people do genuinely think RFK is a public health expert when in reality he has crackpot views.yuekit
    • Yep. He's not a completely horrible guy; he's done some good things on environmental causes, but that's not a qualification.mg33
    • I get what you're saying though...the antagonism is basically the entire appeal for them.yuekit
    • Sometimes I wonder if we made nice comments about Trump whether they would just lose interest in the whole thing.yuekit
    • Dems = elites.
Basically half the country thinks the other half is too bright/too stupid.

The not-so-secret history of Netanyahu’s support for Hamas

From sabotaging Oslo to funneling Qatari cash into Gaza, Bibi has spent his career bolstering Hamas to help perpetuate the conflict. Even after Oct. 7, argues historian Adam Raz, he's still advancing the same strategy.
