ripping songs is apart of the music business . notice satriani waited until it was played a billion times and they get grammies etc before saying anything. like he cares about his creative rights and coldplay just gets more exposure.

How bout a line of custom guitars?
No?
A line of Signature AMplifiers?
No?
How bout an original melody or idea in their collective heads they didn't rip off of Radiohead or U2? (I love the Jimi Hendrix/Sgt. Peppers military jacket look n the new album guys. Fucking original as well.)
Huh. Nope
Satriani 4. Coldplay 0.

By God. Whilst Satriani and his ilk represent all that I feel is tepid and tired in music, that Coldplay song is rubbish.
No matter how frenetically he dances, or how much they spend on strings, there ain't no saving that.
Also, I don't see the similarity. Not that I really care.
- I am a member of tha ilk sir, and I resent your implication.
*harrumphsTheBlueOne - Sorry dude. I just don't garner any enjoyment from 80s rock guitar onanism.Nairn
- I didn't take offense..was just joshing...but you gotta love a little onanism every once in a while...TheBlueOne
- These people won't never understand TBO. Never.Fariska
- Never a big fan of masturbation via arpeggio, I've always found Satriani's music stands out from that crowd.melq
- A couple of luke-warm albums along the way, but overall a collection of really enjoyable songs.melq
- I am a member of tha ilk sir, and I resent your implication.

The Satch is a legend and has contributed more to the world of music than Coldplay ever will. That is such a blatant rip.
- benfal990
Xmas coming soon... everyone will forget about it very soon and Coldplay will make a new album soon enough with many more ripoffs
- Fariska0
Wow! Go satch beat the crap out of these suckers!!!
But as a musician i have to say that often involuntarily rip offs happen very often: You listen to a song and if it has a catchy 4 chords melody it gets into your head and is pretty easy that it comes out when playing and/or composing.
And the satriani song is extremely easy listening (not one of his best, pretty dull actually), and it may be the case of involuntary rip off. It happened to me a couple of times with songs i'd never expected to have liked.
But this for the court doesn't count: this Is a blatant rip off
Satriani just got this melody first.

I saw Coldplay play this on the Jonathan Ross show. Even if they paid due royalties to Kraftwerk, the suckers forgot to give credit in the show interview, never mentioned it wasn't their song.
It was like 3 years ago and I still remember, it was so disturbing. Bunch of hacks.
- doesnotexist0
coldplay are a bunch of hacks, I hope everyone figures this out some day.
- dbloc0
This is the real ripoff

Coldplay: Joe Satriani "Did Not Write 'Viva la Vida'"
"If there are any similarities between our two pieces of music, they are entirely coincidental."
Coldplay: Joe Satriani "Did Not Write 'Viva la Vida'"Say it ain't so, Joe: Coldplay have issued a response to a lawsuit filed against the band late last week by six-string scientist Joe Satriani, who claims the UK megastars ripped off his "If I Could Fly" for their "Viva la Vida". And what do you know, they're standing their ground.
Quoth a statement on Coldplay's website [via Billboard.com], "With the greatest possible respect to Joe Satriani, we have now unfortunately found it necessary to respond publicly to his allegations. If there are any similarities between our two pieces of music, they are entirely coincidental, and just as surprising to us as to him."
They continue, "Joe Satriani is a great musician, but he did not write the song 'Viva la Vida'. We respectfully ask him to accept our assurances of this and wish him well with all future endeavors." Well that's nice, dudes, what about the real victim in this whole mess: that one Brooklyn band?
Billboard.com also points to a recent Musicradar.com interview with Joe Satriani, in which Joe the Guitarist waxes emo about the alleged act of plagiarism: "I felt like a dagger went right through my heart. It hurt so much."
He also says some less corny things: "Everybody assumes I'm trying to go after these guys in Coldplay, as if I'm doing this with malice. That's the furthest thing from my mind. I'm just doing what I need to do as an artist, to protect what's mine, to protect those feelings I put down in song.
"I did everything I could to avoid a court case with this situation. But Coldplay didn't want to talk about it. They just wanted this whole thing to go away. Maybe they figured this little guitar player guy will leave them alone after a while, I don't know. But we're talking about a piece of art that I created, and that's something I feel is important. I think everybody should feel that way."
Both plaintiff and defendant then took baths in enormous pools full of money.

Coldplay Deny Stealing Melody From Brooklyn Band
Coldplay Deny Stealing Melody From Brooklyn Band It's a well-known storyline and one that feels increasingly frequent with the speed of media in the internet age: Popular band steals idea from unknown band without giving proper credit. But in the YouTube-originated case of Coldplay vs. Andrew Hoepfner of Brooklyn band Creaky Boards (via NME.com), it's not so simple (is it ever?).
On one hand, Hoepfner claims in his video that Coldplay's "Viva la Vida" steals one of its main melodies from a Creaky Boards song coincidentally titled "The Songs I Didn't Write". Hoepfner says, "We were flattered when we thought we spotted Chris Martin in the crowd" at a Creeky Boards CMJ performance last fall and then goes on to make passive-aggressive comments about wishing the band well, collaborating with them, and how his lyrics would be more appropriate for the iTunes ad in which "Viva la Vida" appears.
On the other hand, a Coldplay spokesperson gave NME.com the information that not only was "Viva la Vida" "written and demoed in March 2007, seven months before Creaky Boards claim Martin was at their gig," but that, according to Martin's diary, he was at London's AIR Studios when the CMJ show took place.
That's right, the evidence pits one guy's YouTube video against the other guy's diary. Can we all just agree that, especially since Hoepfner isn't pursuing any legal action, it's probably just a silly coincidence? [Or a smart publicity stunt on Hoepfner's part. Good job, dude!-- Ed.]

satriani is a joke. coldplay have been ripping off other bands for years and no one has cared. but still, satriani is a joke.
- mikotondria30
I didn't think the two songs sounded very similar at all - certainly one didnt sound derivative of the other.
The coldplay song is kinda aimless 40-something driving music for sales reps, and the other, althought exquisitely performed sounded like the music that they play through the entertainment system on planes whilst everyone is boarding. Technically very accomplished in composition, performance and production, but sonically the equivalent of a 5 dollar foot long. Neither track has any fucking balls.
- benfal990
still, its a ripoff. fuck coincidences. no way.
- Fariska0
I was just listening at that Satriani Album. That song is definitely one of his worse tracks (ever!). Nevertheless the coldplay one is a blatant ripoff.
They didn't even bother to change the key!
