Make sure you use a Rich ink black for the background, or you could go spot if you have the cash.
- no this absolutely needs to print spot inkshorton
- Rich Black would be an AWFUL idea with this. The lines would disappear via dot gain/plate slip.duckofrubber

aye cheers roundabout - funnily enough just thinking about that.
Is a 2 colour pantone more expensive than 4 colour (for rich black)- yes.cymk cheapertypist
- thanks.mistermik
- Rich black is just a good Mix of CMYK, if you then want to make your own original mix colour for the background you could then add a spot colour, but it will cost extra.roundabout

I believe a call to the printman is in order.
I am going to print this thread and ask him to comment on it.

Sometimes running 100k 100c will give you a good black though with those fine lines I think you need pantone black run twice as you may get a fine bluey haze.
Nice poster btw.

I would like to get a copy, even if it is a proof or something. I live in the states though, but just let me know how much and what not...

They're lovely mistermik. What was the cost if you don't mind my asking? I'm in the same boat as you right now. I have an idea for something I want to print, but zero experience doing so. I hope they turn out for ya, and I'd love to hang one on my office wall if you can spare one.

well due to credit crunch times - just had to go for:
A2, 250gsm, 4 colour with UV spot on all elements.
Someone somewhere works for a print company - trying to get a deal.

Not reading all the posts here, but my 2¢:
- What's a good stock?
—I recommend an uncoated 80# (dunno the gsm's) cover, bright white, vellum finish. Any premium/ #2 grade would suffice.
- Best process to print?
—Litho for the detail.
- Minimum run etc?
—Depends on the printer. I'd say at least 250 for it to begin to be cost-effective for you. 1,000 is better.
- Its A4 vector at - I assume it will scale ok?
—Yes.
- Was thinking of using some special inks to replace the black?
—That much black or dark color will need to be two hits of whatever color you choose. I think a very dark gray like PMS 433 would look very nice. For the gray type and art, I recommend a special silver. In the U.S. it's called Mirasheen or TopStar. Ask your printer for a high metallic silver. Regular 877 won't really show up as metallic on uncoated paper. Also, you'll need to seal the sheet, either with a satin aqueous or varnish. Conversely, you could do a matte varnish everywhere except the silver, and use a spot gloss varnish on the silver areas.Gold would also look nice, but in that case you'd want a warm black. I can't remember which one, but there's a warm Pantone black, like a super-dark brown. You could use 2 hits of that for a rich sea of ink.
Either way you're looking at a four or five color job: 1x metallic, 2x black, then sealant. Most 6 or 8-color presses have inline aqueous, which doesn't count as a press unit, so in that case it would be a 3C job. That would be the most economical, and aqueous is more environmentally friendly since it's water-based.

You could also print 2 color special silver and gold on a black sheet, but it would have to be premium for sure for a nice even black.
You could also print a metallic + 2 hits opaque white. I don't recommend silk screening for small type, it will not get a clean release. Letters will tail off and gain in gross ways.

Whatever you do, do NOT print a four-color black. It will be very difficult to control over the print run on an area that large. It will be more economical and more even on the sheet to use a spot black hit twice.

- nope. def must be a spot ink offset press job.horton
