everyone says something different :)
- start reading where gramme kicked in, everything else in bad advicehorton
- well it's not like printing is some sort of absolute science or anything, it's merely conjecture...neue75_bold

Don't do white foil if you can help it. Two hits of opaque white on black paper will result in a milky sort of dove-gray, which could look nice with the metallic color.

so 4 colour black will be shit.
you suggest two pantone black runs?
and then uv on that will be ok?

Rick black would be a big mistake. Listen to Gramme. The Dude abides.

black overprinting black

how thin are the lines? .25 pt? .5 pt?
- mistermik0
1pt - I think at A2 - roughly.
- any decent printer could hold those on a rich blackmagnificent_ruin

bottom line, 2 hits PMS black plus whatever other color you want, + overall aqueous or varnish (unless you want a gloss/dull effect, in which case you'd need two spot varnishes).
Either way, using spot colors only will cost less money than trying to wrangle a 4CP black. It can be done, but why use four inks when two will suffice?
BTW if you're concerned about registration with thin lines, I've knocked .4 pt rules out of black before. I used .3 for thin rules on white or light backgrounds. .4 of any color on black is a safe weight, any lower and they'll struggle with the fit.

Well, if he's wanting to get the best bang for buck through, say, some online gang-run, then he could go with 4/c black and HOPE for the best. And this would be cheaper than a 2-hit PMS black. But good luck with that, because it will most likely turn out being sub-par. You get what you pay for.

I like my online gang-run printers like I like my meat: dead.

Gramme: I can agree with you to a point. Ideally they would not be used, but you honestly can't argue with the cost-effectiveness, especially for those clients and projects that are just there to pay the bills <cough>. And there are a few gang-runners that consistently do an above-average job.

Gramme: i've been trying to find some info on the mirasheen ink that you mentioned earlier, but i can't find a vendor that knows anything about it. Do you have any contact info for someone that would know something?
- gramme0
Just now seeing this DeSiard. There are different names: Mirasheen, TopStar, etc... but they're basically all the same thing, different brands. Just ask for a high-metallic content ink. Higher than typical 877, 871, etc.
Printers that use Mirasheen or TopStar:

You would be best off doing a Pantone double hit, but you could look into doing 100% Blk and a 50% Cyan "kicker". Just 2 colours and no addtional cost to clean the pres.
