BUMP THE OBEY THREAD MOTHERFUCKERS

"[Fairey] has become sort of what he was rebelling against," says Werner, a partner at the North Side graphic-design firm Wall-to-Wall Studios. "He's ripped off political posters for a long time without attributing the source."
- I have a circa late 90s OBEY poster that is derived wholly from a Nazi SS recruitment poster...homeostatic

"There is a great quote from John Paul Getty -- 'Formula for success: Rise early, work hard, strike oil.' Our next artist, Shepard Fairey did just that. With persistence that has been described as obsessive Shepard's seemingly ubiquitous Obey Giant campaign struck a nerve and catapult him into what some have described as the godfather of American street art. Joining me on starge, please welcome Shepard Fairey."

- Every time I read it, it makes me sick. When did he become the godfather of American street art...Van_Glorious

More main stream you get, more crit you get and get found out as a fraud hence I will continue to rip work behind the scenes.

Isn't one of the downsides of having a trademark that you have to constantly protect it? Isn't Fairey obligated to go after everyone to protect his trademark?
- JSK0
not obligated, more like picking the battle to get more publicity. much like apple, make an example out of someone.

In any IP litigation, the side with the most money wins.
- Well usually yes... "attributable source" they call it.homeostatic

ah, let them fight. the only real winner(s) is the lawyer(s).

That's not the point, damnit. It's UNDENIABLE that he is the godfather of modern American street art.
The problem is he's acting like a fucking mark-ass bitch.
I don't mind his style or his approach to détournement. I DO mind that he acts like a pompous little prick when other people even BEGIN to tread near what he does.
- false. godfather of american street art my ass. I prefer Basquiat.baseline_shift

i lol'd at the comment someone had left on the news article
" Late 80's ??? Please Shepard Fairey was still "studying" "art" at RISDI in the late 80's and sending embarrassing fan mail to West Coast clothing companies that he idolized. Fairey didn't start is horribly meaningless campaigns until the mid-nineties. Get your facts straight. "
those letters should be looked out and published and sold as art pieces or blown up and pasted on walls around cities over his OBEY sh*t hahaha

to all QBN`ers: lets make an OBEY-contest!
Goal: something whit OBEY in it!!! (most be worth for Fairey to sue)

Hey guys, sorry for the self-promo. But I just posted this on my design/creative blog.
I found a clip of him on The Colbert Report talking a little bit about his copyrights. He states that he is only attacking those who are ripping the work to an extreme extent. Looks like that's not the case.
- Anders0
It's not a question about his work becoming mainstream, but that the message his works sends should be anti-copyright. Whatever reason he has to sue, it's completely destroying the myth of all his obey work.

another sad attempt to stay relevant
