are you living in Shanghai Amby?
- heavyt0
i was there a few years ago. I wouldn't go back any time soon.
The only thing that makes it acceptable is the fact that they have Western area, that caters to civilized folks. Of course, prices are teh same as any otehr decent city in the world. Most of the city is dirt, poor, construction, etc.
not a big fan.
- "civilized folks...." :/pango
- that sounded bad - i just mean people that have a high-standard of livingheavyt
- so, more of the literal definition, not the colloquial definition.heavyt
- i don't agree dude.. lame areas aren't that mush inside.. its totally westernized.. u should pay a visit in recent :)Amby
- yeah, i was there in 2004, maybe it is better now.heavyt
- i think as an American, i appreciate good teeth and personal space. neither seems to be important in CHheavyt
- at least, not from what i saw.heavyt
- :) Shanghai is so Gen-Z now! You are talking of some really old era!Amby
- man, i must have been in the bad part of town :/heavyt
- not really ive had people walk right into me like im not there... only in China.epill_
- its like there can be endless space around them but the need to walk into u is a must.epill_
- a foreigner is definitely bumped on here.. haha
what do u expect?
ps: what about people spitting, gurgling, walking while rubbing their bellies and those unstoppable STARES? :DAmby

oh a real city meaning over 1-3 million people. meaning it has life, culture, food, dancing, babes, homeless, rich, poor, everything!!!
like a real city.

hi amby, ideal,
http://www.qbn.com/nikdaum/ lives here too.
and i've been here for 4 years!first thing that springs to mind is the sky (or lack of it)!
- lvl_130
not sure about the number of people living there...i think a "real city" could potentially be much smaller. i consider minneapolis to be a "real city". it contains everything you mention sans the millions.
- not sure i'd ocnsider them on the same level. honestly, you cant imagine a city as large as Shanghai is. no matter where you're from.heavyt
- then not a real city!!! pssh i live in nyc... im biased... sucks...epill_
- yeah, fair enough. i just think people get the idea that everywhere else is bumblefuck in the US if it's not NYC, CHI, or LA.lvl_13
- ...SF or LA. with that said, I have never been to Shanghai, but would love to go.lvl_13
- oh, i wouldnt get defensive. MPLS is cool. Shanghai makes NYC look like Brainerd.heavyt
- i second thatAmby
- shanghai is not equal to nyc, its close but not equal. comparing it doesnt work.epill_
- the reason is i can have anything legal or not delivered to me at any time.epill_
- now... lets look at the legal stuff and in shanghai ...well nyc won on that one..epill_
- hahaha!!!! im juss having a laugh... dont mind me... ive been making war psbs all day.epill_
- i lost my mind already...epill_

i was comparing it to that of other cities in China itself. ive been to a lot of very small populated citites, ive seen citites grow over a few months, in Shenzhen, China it is the fastest growing region in the world, when i first got there 15 years ago there was a small population of 700K, now it boasts 2 of the worlds tallest buildings also has a large population of a few million. it has become a real city, when it wasnt a few small years prior.
i understand whatt you mean about a free world free city america, that is not what im comparing it with. China a lot of the freedoms we rarely shake a thought towards they dont even have the opportunity to have that luxuries and life is very different.
a real city can give these options to their people that they may never ever have or ever get to experience. with communism its very different, in mainland from my experiences thru the years.
i love going there. i just dont care for the humidity and the tsunamis or typhoons.. i like the food and the culture.
small cities i get bored with rather fast. i guess its being from nyc where i have anything and everything i can want. a real city and its always open.
shanghai is large and real.

Strangely, and this may come as a surprise, i love shanghai because of the freedom i have here. London was driving me crazy, tried to live in NYC and gave up after 2 months. Sold my car because I had to pay £500 a year to park outside my house, and £80 fines for stopping to buy milk. Friday nights to see friends meant hour tube journeys across the city, and having to leave the pub by 11 for fear of spending £30 on a taxi to get home. Going out for dinner was a luxury. Shanghai on the other hand, taxi's pass my house every 20 seconds, £2 maximum to anywhere, there are new restaurants opening every day, bars are open til you leave... and most importantly business freedom is unlike anywhere else. You can pick up the phone and call CEO's, business networks are friendly and accessible. i would guess much like NYC 100 years ago, or London 200 or more!
However, if you need live music, design exhibitions, cheap beer and fresh air: Shanghai is not for you.

Exactly my point.. i carry a book of Shanghai 8 years ago n now.. its Tremendous... massive n i've never ever even heard of anything developing this fast.. n then the Olympics happened in the recent... jaw- droppingly amazing...
The point is.. if u look for it... u can find n number of places to freak.. almost 2 years for me now, still when i travel in a taxi or a bus.. i come across so many places untouched.. it beautiful as to how vast and how much this city has to offer.. the more u ask.. the more it has for you..
NYC n China sure have no comparisons as both of them have their own friggin standards.. but this place ain't any less for a normal youngster who's too worked up n just needs to go have a Great time...
Westerners are all supercool... food is Awesomest ever n variant than any other thing in the world... Expensive.. o hell yes.. but kind of is worth having a good time :)

@ epill
did u try Qindao/ Kirin beer n the special liquor they serve during the chinese Spring festival time?
@ Mydo
Travelling is undoubtedly convenient here, except for when it rains :)

So Amby, we get it. Drop all the pretense...You work for the Shanghai tourist board, don't you? :)
- epill_0
i dont goto China for fun or sight seeing. ive made 23 trips in the last 15 years there and at best ive seen hong kong and that is it... my day is usually wake up 5am go eat breakfast then goto a factory for 20 hours 7 days a week and bust ass then back to the hotel exhausted and set for some heavy power drinking to forget the insane work that must get done...
everyone always asks if i ever seen the great wall or the giant buddah statues at Lantau which is close to hong kong but i never got to see em ever... too tired after work... in Shenzhen i would go out every night dancing or something... i like shenzhen...
oi... i just dont miss the flying... 23 hours yuck!!!
:P

is there a real design scene here? good exhibitions? inspiration?
I get blown away how cool everything is when i go back to london, and on the down side, i think living here affects my design work.
- buduasier0
shanghai is amazing.
we partied, went to exhibitions, ate greatly, saw old neighborhoods, met great people from all over the world, and eventually I had sex with a beautiful chinese girl.
all in 4 days.
be sure to hang with locals.
