Flew back and forth from here (NY/CT) to Miami for a year while my wife worked there. Other than South Beach/Miami Beach area, the only acceptable place to live I felt was Coconut Grove. It gets hot as hell and it's the single worst traffic I have ever seen in my life. Get the maximum car insurance you can get. My wife was in 4 car accidents in under a year. There are scams galore where people hit you on purose and try and get you to pay.
There are also pockets where the Cubans and Haitians really dislike white folk. I was refused service at a CVS and several other shops because i didn't speak Spanish. So watch the neighborhoods.

are you thinking about moving for the art scene?

  • lvl_130

You are going to love the music out there!

Okay, I promise that's my last jab :D

here is the map for VICE CITY... memorize it so you know where the melee weapons are hidden...

  • acescence0

my only experience with the place was a few basels and a bunch of wmc events I helped out with. i don't know, i think the heat has possibly melted the brains of a good number of persons down there, some of the slowest people i have ever had to deal with. i like the cuban food though.

south beach is everything you stereotype it to be, but I have family in the design district north of downtown and its a cool area. Little haiti is just up the way and downtown and the beach very close. Kind of up and coming but a cool vibe.

    • where is south beach in relation to downtown?studderine
    • look at the Vice City map its similar... think of south beach in the area where the logo is.e-pill
    • downtown is the exact opposite of the vice city logo on the opposite corner of mape-pill
    • its labeled too.e-pill
    • oprah lives on that island in the middle!acescence
    • miami is just larger than vice city. you are looking at a small version of it.e-pill
    • yes oprah lives in the island where you get to steal the ferraris and lamborghinis!!e-pill
    • i love that you guys are using the vice city map when you cold have just posted an actual miami map!mg33

    if you smoke pot...
florida in their southern climate and marshy swamplands have been able to produce a strain found only to their region in the whole world.

the buds are nicknamed krippy... this strain of high potency buds make anyone laugh uncontrollably for hours!!!! its the best of the best in the world!!! you can only get it in florida...

  • marychain0

    I live here.

Only south beach is what you describe

South Florida has waaaaaayyy more to offer than clubs

    outdoorsy stuff is fantastic.

it's hot as shit most of the time, but at least you can go to the beach in November & December for the most part.

You're a half day drive from Orlando, West coast florida, the keys....lot's of cool little places to explore.

Miami has a TON of nice restaurants

It's kinda of like LA....but not nearly as sucky as LA

Parts of Miami...you'll feel you're in central america.....but I kinda like that...learning spanish definetly a plus

pletty of gorgeous non fake women

all in all though...if you can't stand heat or sun or the beach...I'm not sure you'd be very keen.....if you like those things....you won't find a much better place. It's sunny like 300 days out of the year.

Hit me up if you want to know more

I've gotta say, I've been to South Beach twice and it was nothing I expected. I expected nothing but ridiculous hype, breast implants, douchebags, and generally expected that I would feel really out of place.

Fortunately, it was nothing like that. I know there are parts of South Beach that are like that, but maybe we just magically avoided them.

I loved that it seemed like a melting pot of all classes and types of people. It's kind of like Chicago in a way in that respect. It was all very low-key, laid back, just overall really enjoyable. My girlfriend and I like clubs and stuff like that, but we're not really the type for velvet rope, wait in line, hotel club kind of stuff.

I've got to thank Calles for his suggestions the first time we went there. We met him at what is now probably our favorite bar away from Chicago, Purdy Lounge, which had such a great vibe and crowd. We've been both times we've been there on vacation.

Ok, here it goes. As I said on my comment above, it is what you make of it. MIA, NY, LA can't change the way you are/feel/think. I shouldn't say it cuz I know you're pretty smart person and all, but it sounds deep eh?

Beach? Well, you can find anything there. From douches, to beautiful women, to any type of food you can imagine and a good eclectic mix of nationalities. I always believed this is a major plus. You learn lots of stuff, culture, etc...

Traffic? It's a bit of a pain. Lots of people live here and you might encounter some major traffic jams, but like in every other city, if you know your way around or learn the shortcuts, you're fine. BTW, I lived up north for a few years and noticed that cities like Tampa for example have 2 or 3 main roads. If you have to take them, you're fucked. Not in Miami! There's always a way around and all streets and avenues seem to connect with each other, making it easy to drive, even if you get lost.

Food? Incredible. Everything you can imagine.

Art? Do I really have to go into this? It's everywhere and it keeps growing.

Social life? Great. There's always something happening and your network increases tremendously. You meet interesting people all the time, and even a trip to the mall can get interesting.
Nightlife? Again, you can find anything you want. From the ultra posh clubs, to underground joints or pretty good hotels/lounges or toned-down bars and restaurants. No matter where you go tho, you'll always find beautiful women and a good scene.

Spanish? Always a plus, specially depending on your location. There are lots of different nationalities here and most of the people speak spanish. I have friends and family that don't speak a word of spanish and they survive perfectly fine!

Location? Well, there's the beach. I think CALLES can tell you more about that. He's single and lives there. I have a family and moved towards a more burb-ish type of area which is very nice. It's a little expensive, but worth it if you have a fam and want some peace. If you want something fancier, check out Brickell ave. or even downtown area. There are tons of new condos and lofts with great location and beautiful views. Coral Gables is more residential and expensive, as a single guy I don't know if you'll find much there. Regarding the other hoods that were mentioned (little haiti, little Havana, etc..) I would stay away from them. There's nothing interesting there and are the type of hoods you avoid on every city.

Hope this helps, if you still have questions or would like more in depth email me, I'll be glad to help although I just moved back after 4 years so I'm still catching up ;)

You may want to also check with CALLES, he's a local celebrity and will give you some good advice.

Now, in the meantime, make sure you change your sn to ALL CAPS!

I will say restaurants in Miami have some of the best food I have ever had. Even after spending nearly a decade in Europe, can't beat it.

  • dconstrukt0

i've lived here just about 29 years, good food, traffic gets crazy between oct/april (snowbirds)....

you probably need a car UNLESS you live/work on south beach....

things are more normal in ft lauderdale.... miami has become pretty fucking ghetto lately.

lots of super hot chicks.... and you think its normal for people to drive around in 100k cars all day (they're everywhere)

partying is insane down here, but you also have the beach....
