My friend bought a cheap fixie for like $400 and if you tried to tighten anything up the threads would just strip (stem, cranks etc).
They are basically props, the cheapest fixie/ss I would buy would be a state bicycle co or similar..

I am SO HAPPY I bought that Langster!!!! I've gotten in three good rides this week - 15 miles, 18 miles, and 20 miles today, all along the lakefront bike path here in Chicago. Just put on SPD pedals yesterday, the owns with clips on one side, and regular platform in the other. Got used to them on fixed really quickly.
When I was in jr high through 9th grade, cycling was all I did. All I dreamed about was being in the Tour de France. Cycling may be the one thing I was ever best at and dedicated myself to the most for those 3-4 years. Life changed when I got my first guitar for Christmas in 1992, started playing in a band and skateboarding constantly. I've had mountain bikes since then but this is truly my first time back on a road bike. I don't have any delusions of reliving my former glory days, but damn it feels good to ride fast and get good exercise. Bike is so lightweight and with the clipless pedals it just screams. It's true: blasting by people on bikes with gears and no momentum is a total rush. :)

I had a head on smash with a MTB on the way home the other night, totally killed the forks, wheel and brake on my commuter. Dude joined the path on the wrong side and I couldnt see him becuase of a pole.
Probably be off the bike until after the weekend, still so sore!

building a budget single-speed road bike...
got an '80s Peugeot "donor" for $30 (using frame and rims only);
got brakes, levers, cables.getting a Shimano 16T freewheel...
looking for a decent/cheap single chainring or set to accompany...
something like this Sugino 42T: http://www.chainreactioncycles.c…any recommendations/tips?
- new crank is gonna destroy my "budget" plan... will be using the original parts for now.sine
- old frame + new parts i'm currently looking at about $150 - $200 total.sine
- pake cranks are not too expensive and they look cool... also there's VeloOrange if you wanted to get something period specificshade
- thanks. will look into those. for now i'm using the original components, but they might need replacement soon.sine

getting there...
just propped it up to have a look.
top coat next. then re-assembling drive and fork (i cleaned every single bearing and nut and bolt on this thing, googling and learning as i went along. i also kept diagrams of every single part, except for the rear quick-release, which i'm gonna have to figure out again).- Nice project. I keep thinking I'd like to do the same over the winter.mg33
