I still never understood why you'd ever need 10 speeds. Most I ever used were two or three speeds when I had one.

^ The speeds are often just math, example; My bike has 2 chainwheels in the front and 11 in the back, so 22 possible gears but you can't use all of them because the chain would be too crooked, so it's more like one ring for uphill/lower speeds with 3-4 fine adjustments and one ring for touring (3 adjustments) and one ball-breaking small ring for insane downhill orgies.
