At a later date, ask for some Berlin tips - my parents lived there for 2 years.
F*cking amazing place.

enjoy it whatever you do.
use the night trains to do long distance stretches.
use sites like http://www.seat61.com to get a better idea of routes/advice.
skip brussels :)

neue, that's what i'm worried about the timing. i don't want to spend too many long stretches in transit but at the same time i want to hit as many places as i can.. so trying to find that sweet spot
- I hear ya, the first time I travelled around europe I had 35 days and we hit just a few more cities than you've listedneue75_bold
- and we were stuffed... It's too hard for me to say what to cut from your list, Brussels would be the obvious choiceneue75_bold
- i think i should max it at 5 and anything else is a bonusbrandelec

i might have the option to start at budapest so...
Budapest, vienna, prague, berlin, amsterdam, brussles, paris?- that's better, but probably a bit ambitious for 11 days...neue75_bold

if it was me and there was a little more time I would go south through slovenia and croatia (if you had time head into Bosnia or sialnd hop down the coats of croatia) get the ferry across from Dubrovnik in Croatia to Bari in Italy. Get the train up the coast of italy towards paris.

e.g. you can get a train from Berlin HBF to Vienna that leaves berlin at 19.00 and arrives Vienna at 06.30.
you could probably rock down to venice and then up to Paris.
god know what it will cost though because they are all quite posh routes.
- brandelec0
it would be about 11 days including arrival/departure days.. i think i can figure a way to go north, south, then west
- lowimpakt0
that's not the most appealing route TBH.
How are you travelling into/out of Europe? Does the 10 days include the arrival/departure days?
you have the Alps to the south and Berlin to the North. If you were really smart/organised you could probably fit both of those in.
One of our trains took us through the Austrian Alps last year and there was a lightening storm. pretty amazing.

Milan is alright but if you're doing Venice prob not worth it. Maybe for a day to see the Cathederal...
- brandelec0
How's this?
Prague, Munich, Salzburg, Venice, Milan, Geneva, Paris- honestly wouldn't be my choice, Milan and Geneva = dreadfulneue75_bold
- i can confirm Geneva is quite a letdown. try Zürich instead. Or even Basel..Coffeemaker

terrible website, but a great bar in Paris...

night life in paris is for lamers
- lowimpakt0
but if you stay in the bar make sure you know where your train is going...
last year myself and the girlfriend were on a train from Munich to Ljubljana and were pretty hammered after a day in the beer yards in Munich. We were getting the cheapest seats for the overnight journey - they were just seats at no extra cost on the pass.. We were having more beers on the train and then late in the night we decided to bunk into first class and take an empty cabin for maximum comfort. we continued the party in first class.
Anyway, we wake up in the morning, hungover to shit. We figured something was wrong by the look of the country side. The ticket lady came along and we were like "mmmm Ljubljana ???" and she basically walked backwards out of the cabin waving her hands - gesturing something like "woah, this is not my problem, see ya later"
We then realised that the train was actually pulling into BUDAPEST. different city, different country.
The train had split in the middle of the night with the two parts going in different directions......

- it's true though, even when sober, the trains in Germany can be confusing and if you have eurorail, many times youneue75_bold
- don't have a destination listed, so if you fuck up, generally you won't know until too late..neue75_bold
- wow dudebrandelec
- lowimpakt0
as far as I remember... if you are travelling on night trains you can stamp after 8 o'clock and you will still have the full 24 hours the day after... check this when you buy if you are thinking of travelling long distance in a few blocks.
and Neue75 is bang on about the rocking the fuck out on some night trains. stay in the bar till late...
- neue75_bold0
the sleeper trains are a great way to travel, but not always included with your eurorail pass, you might have to pay extra, actually, pretty sure you do.. but don't get your hopes up in terms of actually sleeping, they make it sound romantic "Imagine gently rocking yourself to sleep" it's more like being violently shaken into a booze-soaked coma...
