Theres no way that should have taken that long to render

In the reflection slot put a fresnel in the texture channel. This gives your reflection a nice more realistic looking falloff. 4.5hrs to render that is pretty crazy. I'd look at your max/min sample values or as stated do it in post. A radial gradient in your alpha slot would also help get rid of that super harsh horizon too....

helpful advice, thanks

not every render has to be completed straight out of cinema. break it up in to pieces and composite in photoshop (read up on object buffers).
for instance you could have done a straight render of the reflection with the samples set to 100 or lower and then done extra blurring in photoshop. while the result may not be as accurate as your c4d render, im sure the render time would be cut significantly. its a trade off i suppose.
basically try leverage the strengths of all your tools.
- oh, as for sheer render speed up... octo core intel power for sureM_C_P

do rendering times typically run into the hours or am i doing something wrong?
- scarabin0
so my final image took 4.5 hours to render. (B1 @ 300dpi)
i'm on a 4x2.5ghz powerpc G5 with 5.5 gb of ram.
would i benefit more at this point with more ram (in terms of rendering speed) or should i just go with a more powerful CPU?
also, what is a good range for reflection min and max samples? (i currently have it set at 300 and 400, respectively) does this affect rendering times much? what about accuracy?
- that's a pretty intense render with those settings at that size. see below.M_C_P

u know how to load em right?>
- CALLES0
just grab em and adjust
i think must of em are shaders so tahts good. and a couple of skies too

haha here you go
- M_C_P0
spread that link calles and I'll love you too.
- CALLES0
its 12 megs
i'm gonna megaupload it
- M_C_P0
increase accuracy and samples.
and don't forget to flux capacitate the subsurface scattering settings.
- eieio0
raytrace the gamma with a little diffusion spectrometer
- scarabin0
yeah yeah yeah. it's a movie title.
- CALLES0
diffuse blur reflection

use mograph to do a huge swirly pattern of hearts all spinning round like in a swish xmassy commercial. Yeh.

i love you too? coming from you? wtf
