For the Non-US QBN'ers. Food stamps are like credit cards given out to poor witch which you can buy food (and food only).
So according NYT article 1 in 8 adults (!) and 1 in 4 children (!!!) is on food stamps in the USA.
Damn, if that doesn't speak how "well" capitalism works then i don't know what will...

So, just to be clear, you can't cash-in a couple of food-stamps for a round of anal fun with some random chick from craft service?

I've known people on food stamps who hardly worked (less than part-time) but lived with someone who made more than enough and would pay all the bills etc...
There were times when we were at the grocery store and she would be picking up oreos, chips and other junk. It used to really irritate me, if your on food stamps than the gov't should (and has every right) to limit (more than they do) what kind of food you can buy. If they would restrict the junk food it might also bring some of the medicaid bills down as well.
*end personal rant*

The U.S. has been through recessions like this before, it's a bit premature to say it's dead. I do think Europe has a more sustainable system overall though.
- <--Delusional. What is unemployment in europe? Riots in france last year? remember?FredMcWoozy

If only the US could be more like Norway... that'd be awesome.

what they don't report is that 1/3 of the folks on welfare probably shouldn't be. the system is extremely easy to scam. i know assholes (i wish i had an "unknow button") who are on welfare for no other reason than a severe case of "somethin' fo' nuthin".
then there's the secondary market: selling the stamps for cash so they can buy other shit.
finally there are those who are legitimately on, but getting off is fairly "ham-handed". it's sort of like stepping off of a cliff, nothing gradual about it.
a friend of mine, a single mother, is dealing with that now. after being out of work for over a year and burning through her savings, she finally gave in and applied for food stamps. she found a job last month at about half what she was making previously. boom! no more aid, as though that first paycheck would cover everything.
my wife and i treated her to groceries and school supplies for the little one.
system restart!
- Last line. Wonderful. Good for you.FredMcWoozy
- she didn't want it, we tricked her.ItTango

it's just another example of moral hazard..
but the moral hazard originating from a few people on food stamps doesn't compare to the moral hazard originating from the bail out of the banks recently or the subsidisation of businesses always.

We're pure fucking evil over here... we hope you all die unless you're white.
