probably a overkill topic here, but ive been thinking about quitting, Im terrified of losing my eye sight from it. Recently a friend's mother had her eye removed.
I think i could easily do it, only when out drinking could be potential difficulties... I dont want to be a binge smoker, one of those people that only have one when they drinking etc, anyone got any tips on how to avoid the social smoker thing?

Exercise

Start running / exercising .. that's the only thing that helped me stop.
I stopped going to bars for the first month. After that I reckon I was over the worst of it .. now I can drink without needing to smoke.

i have been running, ive also started swimming laps at the local pool, but i go to lots of bars, out a lot of the time and its summer coming,
i was hoping someone had something like 'chew a toothpick' or something like that. i dunno, i just need to do something with my hands i guess, probably get arrested for public fappin'- yeah, would be tough to quit drinking in the summer .. I went without during january - which was easier********

I'm not a smoker so this is second hand advice, but I have two friends who did the Allen Carr thing and have never touched a ciggie since. They were both put through it by their companies when the smoking ban came into force.
- yep i know people this has worked for and also a know a lot for which it hasn't********
- This worked for me. Quit cold turkey. That book is amazing.duckofrubber

god I wish I had never started - so addictive, worse than heroin some studies have shown.

Allen Carr

Don't use the gum - it just keeps you addicted to something, replacing one for another. You're more likely to want a cigarette if you keep nicotine in your system with the gum. And it's expensive.
Read the Allen Carr book quickly. It's patronising beyond belief but you feel that you have to stop in order to justify having read it all. It works.
Don't tell people, or yourself, that you're quitting. Just stop and say that you don't smoke anymore. After a few days you'll start to believe yourself. Keep going to bars.
- i couldn't have said it better.mydo
- gum is free in the UK (good health service and all that) and yep as I said above only use it in first few months - takes edge off********
- reading is free.mydo
- I quit with the gum. Not sure if maybe it was just a placebo that bolstered my resolve. But it helped either way.

I smoked for 15 years. Had no intention of giving up smoking. Read this http://www.amazon.co.uk/Little-B… and haven't smoked since*.
*Occasionally i'll smoke a joint or a rolly, which used to start me smoking again, but now, the reasons in the book still ring true.
- well lucky you eh... really happy for you********
- i try not to preach til i'm asked though. you read the book?mydo
- i haven;t i will check it out - desperate to give up...********

Thanks for the info, ill look into the books, i like fax benson's advice about not publicising it and trickin your brain.
im not into the gum, im more addicted to doing something with my hands , think its a nervous thing, rather than craving nicotine, i can normally go a day with out smoking if im not doing much.
- ha! well you aint a smoker then - stop wasting my time.********

cold turkey - thats what i did
and i never go outside with mates to have a smoke anymore because was too tempting once out there- I agree, cold turkey - become a hermit for the first couple of weeks .. write that book you've been meaning to publish etc.********
- And RUN .. the running will become a new addiction .. the endorphins are like a drug - I'm serious.********

I quite cold turkey a little over a year ago after a 15 year 1 pack a day habit. I'm absolutely loving it and don't miss smoking at all.
