Dealing with hackintosh setups it's not worth the hassle in my opinion, some shit won't work properly or you have to be hunting for stuff online to make it work.
If you build such a beast of PC put Windows 7 and get some real work done.
- I MIGHT agree if there was any real work getting done on it.johnny_wobble
- but I'd spring for a real mac, not windows 7, if I was doing work on it.johnny_wobble

I just did a Hackintosh build on a second hand Inspiron 1525 Laptop that cost < £200 using Kalyhaly's method.
Less than 200 quid for a 2.4GHz Dual Core, 4GB RAM, 500GB HD laptop running Snow Leopard aint bad.
It's for my missus and so far after 3 days everything has worked smoothly with no bugs. I added the Kexts to the boot disk before installing and didn't have to update anything after the install.
Everything worked out of the box and it handles PSCS5 fine.

It can be hard work to get a hackintosh build. I spent hours getting my Asus P6T / i7 920 to work - but now it's a dream. I use it for music production.
Put full details at http://phil.replete.nu
- i7 920 + 5850 + 6gb, nice system.
thanks for write up!Hombre_Lobo - Awesome writeup, thanks.nb

I built a hackintosh nearly 3 years ago and it's rock solid still. I don't think it's ever crashed.

I'm seriously considering building one for video editing. I don't do a ton of work but I'm working with a Macbook Pro right now and running everything off of external USB drives is slow and painful. I'd love a Mac Pro, but I can't justify the cost. It seems more economical to build a hackintosh and constantly upgrade SSDs, RAM, processor, rather than dropping $4000+ on a new Mac Pro every few years.
- mine's still running strong. no real issues. never messed with the sleep thing...johnny_wobble
- Migrate your work to firewire 800 drives.. you will be amazedThelonious_Funk
- As good as internal SSDs?nb
- I also like the idea of upgrading to Thunderbolt as it becomes more available.nb
- Hmmm.... MBP+ThunderboltSSD vs. Hackintosh+SSD. Hmmm.nb
- yeah usb is slow as hell. firewire 800. well, SSD is the fastest but also very pricy.akrok

Just finished putting OSX on my HP Touchsmart TX2 -> AMD run with multitouch screen.
I used iDeneb and had a bit of a struggle compared to my missus' Inspiron 1525 (iPC) but I now have a touchscreen Hackintosh. No multitouch yet but it's neat. I still prefer 7 though.

Question:
MacBook Pro + External Thunderbolt SSD
or
Hackintosh w/ Internal SSDWhich is better? It seems to the MBP+Thunderbolt is as fast as an internal SSD. Am I wrong?
- hackintosh + internal, much cheaper.Hombre_Lobo

- Do you plan on running multiple vid cards? Just wondering why you wouldn't go with a Sandybridge processor?ETM
- I guess the 970 would be superior for video, which I assume you'd also be doing.ETM
- nice man. which install method are you going to do?johnny_wobble
- no real reason other than i thought i'd spring for a six-core. there will be some video, yesscarabin
- iboot+multibeast look the cleanest to me, gonna go with thatscarabin
- right on. that's what i used and it's ran fine. on it right now.johnny_wobble
- have you upgraded to lion? i'm curious about how that will affect things...scarabin
- no. i'm still on 10.6.5
just haven't bothered, but updates get worked out pretty quickly.johnny_wobble - guess i should update though. maybe not to lion yet, but all the 10.6. updates.johnny_wobble

Scarabin, you're going to love it,
my hackintosh is pretty fuckn rock solid,
are you going lion or snow leper?btw what liquid cooling are you putting in,
I'm using the corsair H60?
- scarabin0
how's that H60 treatin' ya, georges?
i'm hearing mixed reviews...
- Hombre_Lobo0
@pixter
popular laptops like the XPS have loads of guilds online, I'd be surprised if you didnt get it working the first time round.

@scarabin
v nice setup, but why the i7 970? the i5-2500k is a lot cheaper and overall about the same performance. The i7 970 is a chunk better in 3d though. But for photoshop (which i think you done more than anything else), there is 1% improvement for i7 970.
The only major benefit of the i7 970 over the 2500k is in 3d performance, where its about 15-25% better.
If you've already got all the parts and the money isnt an issue, its no problem, its a crazy good cpu.
sweet set up dude!
Ive got a (what would be considered old) 'amd Phenom II X4 955 be' quad core, overclocked slightly and its a beast.Your new cpu is like 20-30% better than mine and overclocks crazy good, plus with that h60 the overclocking will be schweeeet. ENJOY!
Also you aint got an SSD? your system needs one dude!
- I chose the processor because it came highly recommended to me and I got a deal on it. And hell yes I got an SSD :)scarabin
- Check my parts list abovescarabin
- oops completely missed the ssd, i was scanning for 'ssd' :P
deal? Niiiiiice!!!Hombre_Lobo
- kalkal0
Wouldn't it be a hilarious at this point if there was some terrible incompatibility with the hardware chosen and osx86? :)
- not really. bet he checked it all out.johnny_wobble
- All the parts have been vetted by others, it'll work :)scarabin

anyone running 10.7?

I was running 10.7 on my Dell Mini 9 Netbook but preferred SL, dropped back to 10.6.8, then decided to drop to Ubuntu for speed, and better XBMC capability.
My Mini 9 was a beast - 16GB SSD for main OS, with a customised motherboard with 4 internal USB ports, each with a 16GB drive. One ran Ubuntu, the other 3 were storage.
About £130 spent and a bit of solder, for a 9inch netbook 2GHz Intel Atom (overclocked), 2GB RAM, internal Bluetooth, 3G and 80GB (closer to 70 really as 5 drives at '16gb' is less) of Solid State Storage.
I tried reinstalling OSX the other day but followed the guide slightly wrong so it wouldn't boot, and decided I'd stick with Ubuntu anyway.
