so here's my setup.
i had some hardware troubles (i received a defective motherboard which blew out my CPU, had to replace those) which put the project on hold for a while, but once i got the beast up and running installing OS X was a simple thing. my entire build was compatible with kakewalk http://kakewalk.se so i went that direction instead of iboot like i had planned. i bought a hard copy of snow leopard but ended up using a pirated version of lion and installed everything off a thumbdrive.
right now everything is running smoothly except when i first boot up i have wacom driver problems and sometimes have to reinstall them. graphics look good, haven't tested sound yet.
- oh yeah, and opted to not overclock as i don't really need itscarabin
- also there are some builds on that kakewalk site that are pre-vetted and are super cheap to put together. definitely worth checking out if you're at all interested in a new macscarabin

I've had the same one for 4 years and it still runs like a champ. Using it strictly for music production.

not bad akrok, what about with a SSD?
- add 70 to 160 bucks for a 120GB SSD. >> http://eshop.macsale…akrok
- that if you remove the 1TB. which cost around 100 - 140.akrok

Nothing fancy here. I've converted a bunch of Dell D630's into Hackbooks.
I got a lot of 4 recently for £200. They were all 4GB RAM, 320GB 7200 HDDs running the Intel (not faulty NVIDIAs) chipset with 2.2GHz Core 2 Duos. Using MyHack and the EDPs from MyHack they're a straight install for everything running (including QE and CI) with the exception of hibernate-on-lid close. Flipped them on Gumtree for £290 each.
No hardware changes. No BIOS changes. £800 profit for just installing an OS on 4 machines :D
- Sadly the 2 I already had and ran were NVIDIA's, and 1 of them has gone kaputt.orrinward2

Are most of the intel i5 or i7 cpu/processor - 64-bits? i looked at newegg and only 3 was listed as 64-bits.

@noneck - your setup looks very sweet, and has got me thinking of replacing my 5 year old mac pro. Do you have a parts list, and would you be willing to share?

I'm just chiming in to say my 12-core Mac Pro is astoundingly fast and as it was a business expense it was quite affordable considering my increase in productivity.
These are the only tools we need to create, edit, etc. so spoil yourselves; hackintosh or Macintosh...
- animatedgif0
^ Even if you can afford it Mac Pros are currently a terrible deal. The last speed bump was only because intel no longer made the processors for the previous version.
- I'm not looking for a "deal"; this isn't Walmart. I need a functional machine to produce on.ideaist
- Quality > value...ideaist
- I agree with that, but the Mac Pro is such woefully bad value it isn't worth buying at all for now.animatedgif
- This is coming from someone who hasn't bought or considered buying a PC for 14 yearsanimatedgif
- Better off spending the money on a top end iMacanimatedgif

First off, I followed the tonymacx86 guide to building a hackintosh. It was pretty painless, and there's pretty good support for any hiccups you run into. Any problems I had were because I was stupid, not because it's that tricky. Here's the guide I used: http://tonymacx86.blogspot.ca/se… (I did the Ivy Bridge CustoMac Pro Build).
The cost of this set up is about $1710 + tax + shipping on Newegg.

You can get compatible motherboards that have thunderbolt built in, but based on what I've read about the technology and how it's being licensed, I really don't think it's going to go anywhere.CPU Intel Core i7-3770K Ivy Bridge 3.5GHz (3.9GHz Turbo) LGA 1155 77W Quad-Core Desktop Processor
