Hi All,
I have a group of interns coming in on Friday, so we can work out which of the 5, will be hired for a year. Ive been asked to create a task, that will take 2/3 hours to see how they problem solve as a group, work together etc.
Any good examples of group workshops i could run them through...?
Cheers!

why would you test them in a group when you are looking just for 1?
- grafisk0
Because they will have to work in a group when hired, and a lot of the time you work with people you dont know very well on projects, so this would be a good way to see who takes on what roles within such a task, and who is a wall-flower.
- but if you put 5 unexperienced people in group, you wont see a real average..epill
- as the greatest asnd weakest chains of that group are all relatively equal.epill
- how are you really going to justify your stance in hiring 1 of 5 randomly to work with you?epill
- when they havent been tested to work with your team, but someone elses team..epill
- i really do not like your strategy on trying to hire someone..epill
- did you advise to the 5 that only 1 of them is going to get hired or is that hidden info?epill
- if its not straight forward info, i would say you are the last company i would ever work for.epill
- perhaps place one of your own team members within that group to watch over their work.epill
- and let those 5 applicants know what is on the table for them to bust their ass harder..epill
- you are placing 5 people in direct competition with each other, yet ask they work a teamepill
- that makes no sense.epill
- its confusing to the individual, do they work hard and showcase their skills?epill
- or do they falter backwards and let the team be as 1 unit showing the final work??epill
- so how would you hire 1 of a team?? again your strategy is wack.epill
- Sounds like a great reality TV show.Mattjanz3n

I feel bad for my question. I'm fighting some bad code right now, didn't really think and posted first thing that came to mind.
good luck finding good workshop examples and testing your intern:)

No worries UAN. ;). Good luck battling the code!

What sort of work will the interns be expected to do throughout the year?
Do you already have a good understanding of their technical abilities?
Are you after a demonstration of ability or just observing them to see a spark of flair and ingenuity?

just hand them a current brief of a current/past client.
See what they come up with? It's as real as it can get, no?

HAve decided to do go with a new brief for them on assessing our iPad product, crit it, then ala Apprentice, have 3 hrs to define roles, some wire-framing work, ia / design a mock interface based upon research finding (we supply). So a whole project brainstormed in one afternoon. Should be fun i think for them.
Thanks all for responding...

Just make sure you don't keep them guessing as to where to find fonts, folders etc... just remember if they're using your servers and system, they'll have to ask you what to do every time they need to enter a password or something. I wasted so much time like that when freelancing, and often the client though I was slacking/useless because their IT guy took half the day just to get me server access or I had no one to ask where to find resources like logos and client-specific imagery etc

Drug them. Chain them to the walls in a room and leave clues, saws and stuff.
Sedate yourself and lie on the floor with blood coming from your head so they assume you're dead.
3 Hours later, wake up and award the survivor with a job.
- Not a bad idea, pretend that your the 6th candidate instead of dead. +clues and briefattentionspan

Hard times... you have to compete against 4 other guys in some weird roleplay not to get a proper job but an one year (!) internship, which basically means that you work as hard as everybody else in the company from day one but only getting paid a tenth...
- Its within a sandwhcih course and you get 20k and working within a FTSE company, i wouldnt complain!grafisk
- 20k for a placement is awesome. I was happy with 18k on mine in central London.orrinward
- Could you not interview them, and then give one of them the bloody job.pillhead
- this sounds ok grafisk, didn‘t know about your policies... a lot of shit going on with internships these days thoughpressplay
- I'm with pillhead, this is an unprofessional move. What's wrong with a portfolio review and interview?Andrew_D
- You probably have a good idea that one candidate is stronger than the rest, save the others some embarrassment.Andrew_D

Unless they'll be regularly rushing to create and present work in 2–3 hours, I wouldn't give them a "test." You're asking for a lot of their time and they won't even get paid for it. It's scarily close to crowdsourcing.
- spec work not crowdsourcing, besides its just a testDodecahedron
