Much like any currency or innate value, it has as baseline bench mark. Right now it is against USD. When you are selling it and how quickly you can sell it or exchange it for value of perceived value, will determine the cost of liquidity.

reading the story above, I guess I'm left wondering what happens to bitcoins if the digital files are lost forever, since there's a cap limit to the amount of Bitcoins's total existence, it looks like they could simply vanish and since it's not possible to create more than the originally planned, in time, bitcoins will simply end up disappearing all together.

Dunno, I can't see how this doesn't end badly. The 'idea' is great, and, hopefully, will facilitate more efficiency in monetary exchange.
Fascinating to watch, though. I am simply stunned how many people "trust" virtual accounts/currency.
