What a fucken knob Rich Silverstein is. If you're going to do crap like this, just admit you made a mistake. Don't dress it up in that flowery bullshit.

shockingly shameful rip.
They should be forced to use a new logo, using comic sans...italic.
- < brilliant or everyone just has to wear a scarlet comic sans brocheregiste

The thing about Warhol, Richard Prince, and pretty much every song thats ever used a sample, is that they are taking something old changing the meaning by re-contextualizing said thing.
Goodby in this case, took something old, slightly modified it in form, and then made up some BS about the aesthetics of it so they could win an award. Without any mention of the appropriation until after they got called out...
Its just a bummer. Rich Silverstein is acting like Vanilla Ice when he thinks hes Madlib...
- Yes! They added nothing to the design. They just lifted it and passed it off as their own.Josev

Game on indeed.
Its super bad not just because its a rip but because they think its ok. I think what makes that so bad is we look to big agencies to have the talent and resources to attempt new and innovative design.
Don't know... pretty sad if you ask me.
- jabblon0
and the worst part of it all for me is that it doesn't even make sense. the letter on the outer edge is still the 's', indicating that their abbreviation is actually sg&p. fuck these assholes!

"Appropriation is a big part of our culture. Sampling is part of the modern music scene. Andy Warhol's most famous silk screens were made from other people's photographs. And Richard Prince blew up cigarette ads to make art."
Game on, kids!

kill them. rip their faces off and piss on their skull mugs.

Since when does anyone need the permission, nay acceptance of anothers decisions?
letters were adapted to a monogram. no need to tell you about the inspiration. I don't know if you're aware or not but monograms are designed specifically with the knowledge letters may be interchanged
they should proudly accept and keep their award. good decisions earned it.
- Bit of a stretch. They accepted an award for a creative work that required little to no creativity in actuality.Gucci

If they would have said it was a rehashed logo from 1905, I'm cool with it.
BUT they didn't say that first, and submitted it to Cannes. Bad.
- monNom0
stole an ancient monogram. okay.
submitted their 'brilliance' to a design competition. too far.

I like this:
When creatives do it, it's a rip-off.
When creative directors do it, it's a homage.

Goodby, Silverstein's New Logo Is Actually 100 Years Old Rich Silverstein admits 'appropriating' old mark
- utopian0
The new logo for the renown ad agency has been making the rounds for being a modified lift of a monogram drawn in 1905 found in the compilation Monograms and Ciphers by Albert Angus Turbayne. The logo recently won a Cannes Lion Award. After much speculation on whether it was a rip-off or not, founder Rich Silverstein sets the record straight: “So it’s not a coincidence that the logo looks like a 100 year old ligature. It was 100% intentional. I found it in my library in a book of ligatures that I’ve had for 30 years and always admired. I thought it would be nice to take something old and ignored and reimagine it. And that’s what I did.” Keep it classy ad agencies, keep it classy.

It hilarious how out of place that P is. They didn't really make an effort to use the same type of style. You think thatd they'd make a sligth effort to make it blend in more. Amazing.
