- I keep seeing Moog Theremini on eBay going for £60-70 less than they do on Reverb. Thought about buying one ...microkorg
- ...mostly for the kids to play with (3.5 and 1.5) and if its not popular then just flog on reverb for a wee bit more.microkorg
- my 5 year old loves our Moog thereminiautoflavour

I have an M-Audio key rig 49 usb keyboard and the USB input port on it just broke. The gold metal receptors bent and one broke off so now I can't connect to my laptop. How hard is it to replace that usb input on one of these things? I hate the thought of throwing it out if it can be fixed easily. thanks
- Get a soldering iron and some flux and wick. Practice on something first! https://youtu.be/eqI…err
- My akai mpk mini usb port got bent. Took it apart, cut one socket off the usb cable, soldered it directly to where the socket connected.shapesalad
- bought a usb soldering iron from amazon for peanuts. Better option for environment is to fix something. Especially when what's broken is so minor.shapesalad
- You just need a steady hand and google. Examine how the usb plug is wired before you cut it off, use a craft knife to cut into the plastic of the plug.shapesalad
- Once you know where the red etc cables are going, you can figure where those go in the socket. Or just google it all.shapesalad
- What I mean to say is, the only problem to solve is to figure out which wires to solder where.shapesalad
- ^ i think he means the socket, not a plug. err is right, but your talking about $40 for a new socket, soldering iron, flux, wick and if your not confident somekingsteven
- clamps to hold it all together...kingsteven
- oh you wired a cable to the points? fair game. tbh i'm pretty sure i'd just buy a new one and stick the old one in the garage with the intention to fix it andkingsteven
- throw it out about 5 years later.kingsteven
- my m-audio keyboard started chucking out random midi commands for no reason. fucking piece of tat. so now i have the roland a-49 and it's a much nicer keyboard.hans_glib

Slightly off-topic, although not absolutely (one of microkorg's notes on this page made me realise this'd be a good place to ask) -
Do any of you beat-making parental-types (or even just kids at heart-types) have any suggestions for 'musical interactive widgets' for young children?
if I was smarter and had more time I'd make something, but obviously it' dbe just simpler/safer and better to buy something, rather than risk electrocuting or cutting my child.
One of those tracker-type grids with buttons would be cool, but then the only ones I've seen were.. Not Cheap.
Thanks for any thoughts
(I've currently got an M-Audio Axiom keyboard in the studio here to be fixed to take back to her - I think it's a little overwrought for her at her age though).
- oh, haha - I just scrolled up to see that stoplying's got likely the same slightly-busted keyboard :)Nairn
- I suppose 'a tablet and some apps' would suffice - but we're limiting her access to glowing touchy-swipey rectangles 'til she's 16.Nairn
- What the fuck is the proper name for those music tracker grid things? Surely there must be a Chinese rip off by now?Nairn
- Y'know - the things that are a few inches on eitehr side and made up of a matrix of buttons that when pressed make noises as the thing tracks through?Nairn
- Step sequencer?mort_
- don't overthink it just buy a small keyboard, something like a Casio SA-46. then she'll get familiar with the basics of music.hans_glib
- My 11 year old loves Garage Band on the iPad. Finds it easier than Ableton or the full Garageband on Mac.mort_
- I guess so? But simpler? There was some self-contained toy that came out about a decade ago that fits what I''m imagining.. was just expensive.Nairn
- It looked *vaguely* like this sort of thing:
https://images.equip…Nairn - Ideally it would be the sort of thing that could work on its own, with a speaker inside, etc. Not just a midi input device. Can't remember wtf it was calledNairn
- @hans - A Casio PT-1! :)
Ooh, £25 on Ebay... https://bit.ly/2RB2k…Nairn - @mort_ - my kid's *much* younger. I'm thinking something she can stupidly thumb, wondering what the fuck is going onNairn
- https://www.youtube.…mort_
- oh my fucking word that is cool.
i'll start saving now for when she's a bit older, hahaNairn - This sounds pretty cool. Cooler than it looks! https://youtu.be/am_…mort_
- Warning - gateway to a crippling modular synth habit!mort_
- Then there's also the LittleBits / Korg synth which is also not cheap but looks so much fun and perfect for younger kids.mort_
- tbh it looks fucking cool tooNairn

- You like this? I've seen it as I look for an analog drum to join my SQ1 & Model D. Wanted the rackit drum synth, still sold out. No Volca Beats. apples/orangesimbecile
- i like the fact that it’s a classic I’ve wanted and pairs w/ td3, love the compact form factor... but really want the 909prophetone
- the price point on both make them really attractive. I have so many digital drum kits, i worry about my analog drum futureimbecile
- just noticed they took the imac route with colors. lime, grape, blueberry, orange strawberry are all translucent.imbecile
- for such a long time I lusted after a TR606 .. then I babysat one for 2 years.. and to be honest, I am glad I never paid money for it. sooooo over rated.autoflavour
- also, listening to the side by side, its close, but no cigar https://www.youtube.…autoflavour
- nice video, definitely hear the difference in the hats. i do like the simplicity and sequencer thoughimbecile

i managed to snag one of these lovelies, which were back in stock for about 2hrs. i'm not entirely sure what it does, but really looking forward to mucking about with it. i've already made a probe mic (ooer) to use with it.
- microkorg1
- Think these are collectors items now. they were never cheap so i imagine rare and pricey.microkorg
- There's DATO Duo and Playtime Engineering Blipbox. Both synths aimed at kids. But not a 'toy' price.microkorg
- For a first step into synths then maybe Korg Monotrons? Or something more usable/complex could be Teenage Engineering Pocket Operator range..microkorg
- ..or a collection of Korg Volcas that could grow :)microkorg
- https://monome.org made a really nice grid sequencer too. Not sure if it's still availablePhanLo
- https://www.youtube.…PhanLo
- Aye, THAT's what I was thinking of, thanks! I knew they were expensive, but I figured they might've been ripped off by nowNairn
- I wish they still made them. :-(PhanLo
- Wow, crazy price still! just checked eBay. Aye crazy that someone's not made a knockoff/kids version.microkorg
- PhanLo0
- Tenori-On and Monome look alike but are completely different beasts. The Tenori is an instrument and sequencer with sounds etc in memory.microkorg
- Monome is purely a controller. People have created scripts to control various instruments/Daws/and Norns. But to create your own you need to code I think.microkorg
- ...and it's definitely not a kids toy. They cost a lot!microkorg
- I love grid controllers (currently using 3 launchpads), but these guys are on crack with these prices.section_014

fun, surprised no one suggested these when i was thinking about buying their other repro synths to add to my model d
- i've been ignoring them because i DIY built a system 100 clone about 5 years ago and these work out cheaper than the parts :=|kingsteven
- please clarify.. are you saying one could buy these cheaper now, than you built them then? each piece is ~$99imbecile
- as you dohans_glib
- no he's saying the opposite - it cost him more to build one himself.hans_glib
- read again, that is what i wrote.imbecile
- i have read again, and by some witchcraft i can now see that it is indeed my badhans_glib
- high five! thanks for the clarificationimbecile
- Yep. Panel and pcb for each DIY module was 30 - 45 each and while components are cheap as chips... all those knobs, switches and sockets add up.kingsteven
- I have frequency central ones and they have a few tweaks from the originals but some of the behringer modules are doubles (vca, adsr)... much cheaper for a systkingsteven
- system + DIY modules have no resale value!kingsteven
- i see, thanks for the additional info.imbecile

Addendum... Looking for advice, input, experience... conversation if you will.
I had to admit to myself that I'm not a musician. I enjoy making noises that sometimes have melody. Programming drum beats is fun. But, as far as recording and mixing, mastering, being able to sing, or play an instrument with any natural ability? No, it doesn't exist.
That's why I never finished my conversation autoflavour. He wanted to discuss what my goals were. Frankly, the few times I tried to write him, I realized I had no goals, so I was essentially throwing money up in the air.
That said, I have Maschine and Ableton both legally installed. I prefer Ableton, so if I even keep one Maschine license at this point is a question. I have two licenses.
I bought a NI Mikro MK1 years ago, a used Maschine MK1 w/ new stand years ago, and a used Maschine Jam last year. Go figure, none of these controllers help me use Maschine any more effectively. Maybe I've used Ableton too long.
Yes, you read that correctly, I have three Maschine controllers and two NI software licenses that all go unused. To accompany them, I also have controllers in the form of...
M-Audio Keystation 88es
M-Audio Axiom 25
Akai APC Mini
Korg nano kontrol
Numark Orbit
Behringer CMD Micro
Mixtrack Pro 3 (used three times, four years ago)
M-Audio M-Track (forgot I had)I had an APC40 that I traded for my Mackie studio monitors.
My Onyx 820i digital mixer is still awesome.
I sometimes miss my microKorg, but it was cool sounds on a keyboard I couldn't play.
There's a monotron and a pocket operator around here somewhere too, I think.-
I wonder if I should put most of this stuff on reverb, etc to try to sell, or just a trip to Guitar Center to get it out of my hair and a little cash to buy an analog drum. That stuff takes up space and I'm not using it.
Anyone need a controller or Maschine license?
My new path is analog, free from the computer. I want to do more with the Model D than send MIDI to it, hence the SQ-1 and a desire for analog drums. The less expensive I make this the better.
- Sell and simplify! Sounds like you've already made up your mind ;)microkorg
- that part is definitely going to happen. i'm hoping for some analog drum inputimbecile
- Couldnt go much wrong with the new behringer RD clonesmicrokorg
- they look great for the cost. and... I can't find my monotron, but the pocket operator I have is the PO-12 rhythm.imbecile
- Recently got the Moog DFAM. It's incredibly fun. But not a bread an butter drum machine.mort_

- I'm at a similar place, i sold all my drum machines, bought an MPC1000 for cheap, all sounds i use created with minimoogfuturefood
- bought an 8 track digi recorder so i can get away from the computerfuturefood
- that sounds dope, future. love the single device sampling approachimbecile
- i keep thinking about the MPC you mentioned, future. I had briefly thought of one but that is a whole new direction i hadn't considered. maybe later. cheersimbecile
