Quite an inspiring interview with Paul Woolford (from 2017).

    https://www.attackmagazine.com/f…

"The human race has no chance. We are inconsequential in the grand scheme. So go full-pelt and let’s just see what emerges. And if we, by some accident of chance, create something that sounds or looks great, well it’s a touch. Francis Bacon would have a painting almost 80-90% finished, get back from being on the piss all afternoon, throw a blob of paint at the canvas and in that split-second, that would decide the fate of the piece. Sometimes the act of throwing the paint would land on the canvas in such a way that it completed and locked in the form. Most of the time it ruined the painting and he then destroyed the canvases. To take such a chance means that he is looking for something else, something out of the ordinary. You only find things out of the ordinary by keeping up the process of work. So as much as I say it’s an accident, the conditions were designed and in the right place. What’s the expression? Inspiration finds you working. You’re not gonna get anything done if you’re not in the room trying."

In love with the sound of the Vermona Perfourmer from watching youtube vids from this guy. It's a 4 voice / 4 oscilator analog synth that just seems to have a sublime softness and warmth to it.

I love my 1010Music Blackbox but I suck at making it be a 'synth' even though I've got millions of synth samples. I've always struggled using samplers this way, think my mind just sees samplers for drums and loops.

So been thinking about getting a new multivoice synth, only have a £200-400ish.

    Thinking about:
Elektron Cycles - but fear that all samey sounds?
Elektron Analog 4 Mk1 - had one before, loved the sounds but sold it to get back to in the box

(also thing about these two is that they are simple - cycles is simple to learn and use and cos ive had A4 previously i know the basics)

Any other suggestions? The thing that really turns me onto the Elektron gear is the parameter locks and ability to have different sounds per step.

I'd be using the sampler for Drums, ambience, vocal/voice. Have my Monsoon Module for drone/ambience. Just need something that can do leads, pads, bass, some 303 style tweakery.

    • I recently picked up a used Roland SH-01a - great for leads, pads and acid bass and within your budget. While it's digital, it still sounds pretty lush.mort_
    • A used Dave Smith Mopho x4 or a Tetra module would get you what is basically a 4 voice Prophet 8 for around that kind of money.mort_
    • Minilogue / Minilogue XD also in that range.mort_
    • Thanks mort. moreso looking for something like the A4/cycles which has inbuilt sequencersmicrokorg
    • Those three do have built in sequencers to varying degrees but might be limited for your purpose.mort_
    • If you are going back to A4, might I suggest tracking down the analogkeys.. got both and the keys is a wildly different beastautoflavour

Are there any cheap midi controllers that are just knobs? Like a grid of 16 or 20 that can be assigned to whatever parameters you need?

I’m thinking about getting a weighted key keyboard controller, and most don’t include knobs. I’d want a knob-based controller next to it where I could also assign other parameters beyond those that affect synths: reverb, delay speed, panning, etc.

    Any suggestions?

The MidiFighter Twister IS a great, well built controller and also can double up as a drum sequencer too. Had one for a while. Drawback of it is that you have to remember what you've assigned everything to.

I went from the Twister to a Faderfox PC12. I thought it was the answer to my dreams - so many knobs! But again if you are having multiple banks you either have to remember or create overlay sheets for the thing.

I sold it and got a Faderfox EC4. Just slightly more expensive than a Twister but packs a way bigger punch as it has a screen which can tell you what all the parameters/knobs are you've assigned.

Couldn't recommend this thing enough. Built like (plastic) tanks in Germany, small footprint.
    http://faderfox.de/ec4.html

You'll probably have to shell out for a new one as they are VERY rare to find second hand - probably cos everybody holds on to them!

    • EC4 is also endless encoders too like the Twister but no feedback/indicator around the know but is shown in the screen.microkorg
    • EC4 is niceeprophetone
    • (not 'know', should be 'knob' lol)microkorg

    • Was checking out the marketplace site and it launched in February. Wondering if they offer as much 'safety' for buying/selling as eBay/Reverb though.microkorg
    • Recently made my first couple of purchases on reverb, usually find it more expensive than eBay though.microkorg
    • And don't mind selling on eBay. I wait till it's a £1 Max Fees weekend then shove everything up I want to sell.microkorg

Having a nightmare ATM with my AcidLab Drumatix, loved this drum machine and put it to good use for a few years - basically a 606 with extra controls, 808 rimshot, DR110 clap, an extra 808 kick and snare channel and individual outs and volume knobs per channel. The dream right?!

Well over time a few of the volume knobs had packed in which means it's been shelved for a couple of years. I even put it on eBay last year at a reasonable price, but just got a bunch of low ball offers due to the faults... Finally last week decided I should fix it up.

Wish i'd never opened it FFS

I don't know if it's just an early model but the circuit board is bodged as fuck, components bridging all over the show, all the volume pots are cheap as hell and have had their shafts cut down to fit + two big flimsy rotary switches marked 'MADE IN EAST GERMANY'

After a couple false starts due to a dodgy soldering iron I finally replaced the 4 dodgy knobs with high quality pots and tested it all out yesterday - took about 2 hours just to get the old pots out due to the double sided PCB and close proximity to SMT components... but seemed like a decent job, tested it all out and everything was working perfectly. Started reassembling it in the case one of the rotary switches broke open and out popped a miniscule spring across my studio in to the ether... FUUUUCCKK

Just ordered what I hope to be a suitable replacement spring from China but jaysus - don't think I look at it the same way ever again, or sell the fucking thing with a clear conscience! I see a Behringer RD-8 in my future.

    • Didnt realise that image was so shit http://imgur.com/a/5…kingsteven
    • Find a local place that can service it for reasonable price?prophetone
    • ach, it's more a pain in the ass than something outside my realm of ability - i cant find replacements for the rotaries anywhere and i now know all the originalkingsteven
    • pots will fail and need replaced in time too. i'll get there eventually but the shoddiness of the build is a turn off more than anything.kingsteven

    • the SID chip is an incredible piece of design. even though the C64 was 8-bit, the SID is internally 16bit oscillators and analog filter and modulation...kingsteven

Just came across Gregorio Soave's deep house and melodic techno jams on YouTube. This music would turn my head even without the visual of all the modular gear he uses to make it. Beautiful stuff and impressively restrained, given the setup he has.
