I went for the Teenage Engineering PO range. Thanks for the suggestions. Keeping the rest in my notes for future gifts.
- It's not for someone I've known for too long, so I don't want to get any heavy-hitters yet :)Jaline
- Come on, just get him a minimoog.futurefood
- Good choice :_ The PO's are good fun and can be integrated into bigger setups easily.microkorg
- Yea, the PO12 is pure drum machine joy.futurefood

I put this together this morning.
I had worked on the MIDI a few years ago but decided to drop a chill beat behind it using a flute for the melody.
Assorted sci-fi and friction sounds make up the ambiance.

- i dont know what it is with Korg, they just cant seem to design good looking keyboards.. even the MS20 was a clunky mess..autoflavour
- Radius, Electribe, MS2000.. all ugly as.. i guess the Trident and the Monopoly werent too bad.. but yep, this looks cheap and nasty..autoflavour
- but in the end, if if sounds good, who caresautoflavour
- Yeah this is a strange looking thing isn't it. I think it's the one inch wide nothingness around the permiter. If it didnt have that then it would look bettermicrokorg

- Why even put that amount of keys. I'd bet most people would prefer a module version. I mean, everyone has a fucking midi controller.section_014

Where's this Yamaha standalone Elektron-MPC-killing sampling groove box synth thing the rumour mill has been abuzz about these past few months? Bring it on!
- #namm2016prophetone
- never been into Yamaha for synths or anything.. but my Yamaha o1v mixer is another studio stalwart .. also about 15 years deep on that babyautoflavour
- it was meant to be Roland i think ,microkorg
- I am imagining a standalone box with similar looks and function sequencer wise as the elektrons but with turbo charged synth engines, etc.prophetone
- Like an RM1X combined with an MPC with all sequencing bases covered, USB connectivity for file mgmnt, OS potential to add sound engines, etc.prophetone
- But in a tight little package like an Octatrack but at half the price, or less!prophetone
- We'll see...prophetone

Help me out here. Considering a new MIDI controller, looking at the Alesis VI49 since I've read some good reviews.
What would someone typically use all the buttons below the knobs for? I currently only use an Alesis Micron as a MIDI controller, which is kind of cool for recording audio through my guitar effects while also recording the MIDI notes.
I get mapping the knobs to various things in Logic, but what would i use all those buttons for?
- looking at their product page, get the V49, it doesn't come with the buttons.uan
- I've considered that one. The number of pads on the VI are nice; the V49 only has 8. My Korg nano pad is on the fritz.mg33
- To be honest I don't do a lot of knob fiddling that couldn't be easily accomplished strictly in Logic.mg33
- this keyboard looks more for live performance.. in that instance, each knob would be a channel fader and the buttons below would be solo, mute etcautoflavour
- Cool, thanks. Definitely not looking for that. Need a better playing surface mostly, better keys.mg33
- what auto said. Native Instruments Komplete & their keyboard gives pre-mapped controlsmicrokorg
- whereas with other brands you have to setup all your own. like novation with its automap etc.microkorg
- Thanks. I've done a bit of that with an Oxygen controller I had years ago.mg33
- The music I'm working on is more ambient / instrumental using guitars, and more natural synth pads, piano, Rhodes, lots of reverb, delay, etc.mg33
- So as much as I wish I had more electronic music skills, it's probably not the direction I'm going in. A decent electronic drum sound and a live drum soundmg33
- is what I'm trying to find a happy medium between.mg33
- Stuff like this: http://mg33.net/musi… - that's a few years old, revisiting it eventually.mg33
- ^ that's using sounds from the Animoog iPad app as well, which I'm a huge fan of.mg33
- Use ableton live? got an ipad? get touch-able app for lots of hands on controls and ability to make bespoke controllers per songmicrokorg
- micro - I was literally last night trying to reconnect the custom midi controller app I have to Logic. It's over WiFI - I need to get a physical conn for it.mg33
- This is the app I've got - http://www.iosmidi.c…... The latency over the network wifi sucks, so looking to connect physically.mg33
- Alesis makes some pretty shit midi keyboards, imo. Check the Nektar line. Affordable and good quality.section_014
- section_014 - thanks for the tip. Those Nektar controllers look nice.mg33
